Credit card for foreigner

Can you get an Indonesian credit card pre NPWP? Even though I am a Premier Customer at HSBC they said they may not give me a credit card even after I get the NPWP. I have a simple answer to this, I will put my money in a bank that will accommodate me. I have found HSBC premier pretty well useless so far, unless you need to do international transfers. Even there the only benefit to premier is you save the small transfer fee. Then here they offer "preferred rates" that I can get at other banks, without being premier and buy sell rates that are worse then another bank where I don' have preferred status, so what really is the point of putting more capitol in HSBC but really no benefits. In my country I could get all the benefits HSBC premier offered at 5% of the deposit rate. The only thing they offer is no overseas transfer fee and direct overseas banking. I ranted a bit there but my original question is," can you get a credit card pre NPWP"? Thanks for any replies.

Both my wife and I have credit cards from our HSBC Premier Account Jakarta and we don't have NPWP. However, like most foreign banks, we were required to have either Kitas or Kitap to open the account.

Thanks Davita. I think it may have changed some recently and some banks are requiring NPWP. It has this in the HSBC credit card booklet as a requirement along with a KITAS or KITAP. But the fact he needs to check if I can even get a card post NPWP has me thinking I don't need premier. However, I was wondering if some banks still give cc's without NPWP and I imagine the answer is yes. Again, thanks.

Bank Permata gave me a CC without an NPWP, but they had to cap the limit at 40 juta as they said anything higher than that required a NPWP, this was several years ago though, so things may have changed.

Okay thanks. I will check out a couple of banks.

If you are over 65 forget it,

Anglian, I was looking on the Panin website, for there Platinum Card, and it has the age requirements as age 21 to 75. You also need a minimum 120 million salary per year but a deposit is also listed. Their Gold Card lists a minimum salary of 60 million or deposit. They also list a 49 million maximum without a NPWP which answers my prior question. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your thoughts Daniel, but sadly I'm 79 now, so past the age limit, as a mater of interest they company I worked initially put my salary through Permata bank, the offered me a CC, but the company changed salary payments to BCA so I never followed up with Permata, I was 72 at the time

I have to agree about HSBC Premier. They would not give me a credit card because I was on a pension. This is despite my pension exceeding 600 million a year and having a reasonable investment balance with them. As for the rest of the services they are useless and have cost me money through bad investment advice. They offered me 5% on a fixed deposited this week when I could get 6.5 % with BNI.

That's my experience, as well. HSBC in Indonesia reminds me of Wells Fargo in the USA. Most bankers are self-serving ass holes and HSBC'ers are good bankers.

How have you found Permata to be overall? I've been considering giving them a go as I've heard they are much more lenient and easy to deal with. Helps there is an ATM right up the road from where I live too.

After spending 2 hours in a Permata office since there were 'system issues', and with an amazingly bad (well, in fact non-existent) communication by the manager, I swore never to set foot in there again and asked 'she who is in charge of all financials' to find alternatives for our (€) accounts there.

And the amazing thing is that Permata had all these banners and billboards in the affiliates that there was a guaranteed waiting time at the tellers of no more than 8 minutes. So what did they do? Instruct the security guy to give nobody a ticket with a number. So nobody had a proof they were waiting for a longer period. Chaos.

My wife talked to Panin Customer Service and they indicated we needed NPWP before credit card. I realise we can go to a branch and discuss deposit and credit card but I have decided to wait and get NPWP. Also, I did not have any money here yet so perhaps HSBC will be forthcoming with a credit card. Once I have NPWP if HSBC gives me any problem regarding credit card, I won't waist my time but will explain I will put most of my deposit elsewhere, and I will.

That's odd...I'm on a retirement Kitap, and not been employed since 1990, but HSBC Jakarta gave me, and wife, world premier Mastercards. I have 2 FD's revolving 3 months and receive 6.75 on the one that matures later this month and 6.5 on the other maturing mid-November. As Bank Indonesia recently dropped its rates I suspect a qtr% less when renewing.

You have been much luckier than me in dealing with HSBC. I was also getting 6.5 % on rolling FD but this dropped to 5% last week on rollover. when I question this the answer was invest more.

I applied for an Australian Account and it took 18 months to get it. Even that only occurred after I attended a Branch in Canberra on a recent visit. I currently have also been waiting 8 days for a replacement pin.

I think that my problems started when I complained about advice given by a Relationship Manager which cost me a large amount in write off.

Although the HSBC Indonesia have been bad, the service provided by HSBC Australia has been the opposite.

I decided yesterday I am closing the HSBC accounts and moving them to BNI Emerald Banking. I am also going to sell the bonds that I have managed by HSBC and move the funds to a Rural bank

I would be very careful asking banks for anything without a NPWP. Banks are a big player in the tax amnesty and if you have enough where they think you should be paying taxes and you don't have a NPWP. you could get reported. Unless you fully trust the bank, I would be careful looking for credit cards.

I just have not been in the country for 6 mos.=no NPWP but I will be getting one. Therefore, there is not much to report.

I just got a slightly limited reply:
"Saya dengan Cakra akan menjelaskan informasi yang Bapak/Ibu perlukan.

Berkenaan dengan email yang Bapak/Ibu sampaikan, kami informasikan bahwa untuk pembuatan Kartu Kredit BNI dapat juga dengan menjaminkan sejumlah dana (dengan jaminan deposito) dengan mendatangi kantor BNI cavang terdekat."

So you have to have a deposit. I take it as a secured credit card so basically a debit card with a fee tacked on.

Instead of shopping around and getting a 'njet' everywhere you might also go along with this collateral and then wait a year or so till you get offers from other financial institutions here. There simply needs to be more credit history etc.; the moment you're on that list you'll get your phone calls. All day long.

My Daughter tells me BCA kept phoning her to get a credit card, so eventually she applied, they rejected her application, no reason given,
