Indonesia will introduce its own credit card; Bank Indonesia (BI) will launch a physical government credit card through a soft launch this month, while the official launch is in May 2023.

The deputy governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) stated that according to the direction of president Jokowi, the domestic credit card does not use Mastercard or Visa as payment processing system.

So the system used is the Gerbang Pembayaran Nasional (National Payment Gateway - GPN) from Bank Indonesia. This payment transaction system that connects various banks is used for ATM and debit cards.

The remarkable thing is that one of the major drivers for using this system is to avoid a situation (as in Russia) where the payment systems can be disabled by foreign governments and companies.

It seems the card can also be used in Malaysia.

Bank Indonesia (BI) officially introduced and launched the Kartu Kredit Indonesia (KKI) for the retail and general consumer public yesterday so on August 17, 2026, coinciding with Indonesia's Independence Day.

So after the launch of the Government Credit Card (KKP Domestik) for state and government procurement in May ‘23, testing and overcoming the hurdles took more than 3 years. It is still a digital credit eh …. card* mainly for use with QRIS etc. Later they expect it will also become a physical plastic card with chip etc.

Eight banks support the rollout: BCA, Bank Mandiri, BNI, BRI, CIMB Niaga, PermataBank, Bank Mega, and Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI).

* Allo Bank also offers a digital-card-only but it’s a VISA credit card

This is the general information of Kartu Kredit Indonesia (KKI)

It is a creditcard (not debit card) so even you access is from the participating bank apps such as BCA, Mandiri, BNI, BRI, CIMB Niaga it will not deduct it immediately from the linked current account. Also the fee for merchants is lower than credit card using Visa/Master payment processing.
Not every Indonesian residence could get it, as people must apply and pass a credit check (SLIK / OJK checking). The bank evaluates their income and risk before granting a specific spending limit

As I understand it there is a minimum regular income set in the regulation, for a bank financial institution to legally issue a creditcard. So those without prove of a regular minimum income will have a problem to get approved.

I believe the NPWP might be required, if the credit limit is above the basic limit of Rp100k (?). Also Rp100k for a monthly spending is very low, even for average Indonesian people.

This credit card was already launched a few days ago. If people could share their personal experience applying this KKI people could also learn it.
