I hate it when people judge me using the "bule gila" stereotype - which is actually very rare these days - but I can understand how it might perpetuate when locals see the fall out of events like "Our" Nick's antics

No offense intended but these kinds of OZ tourists really do give a bad image to the rest of Australians and not just among locals. My French friends in France also think that way.

On a side note: does that "news" paper ever proof read what they write?

Ya, during the day there are some weird people walking about ,but after dark is when the whole area changes , a lot of drunks ,"dodgy people" of all races infect the area .

And last night a group of 4 bule were stealing bottles from other tables including my friends. All caught on cctv

I mean we all know the joke about bule guy in the bars here, "raja minyak" being suddenly so handsome and rich in Asia (but not in Europe) blah blah blah but the sense of entitlement and then just the disrespect shown to hardworking locals, the culture etc etc is despicable. I am well know amongst my local friends as not liking bule too much, don't socialise with them etc, which always makes them laugh until I explain that I am just embarassed to be associated with them, it is always the bule in the bar after 3 Bali Hai (the cheapest available) they suddenly want to fight everyone, or complain about the bill, or abuse the girls as if every woman at the bar is a prostitute or something.

They would never ever behave like that in their own country.

Anyway rant off

BTW the irony of course is the couple in the temple were "bloggers" and now they have Immigration looking into what they do here, visa status, etc since they have lived in Bali for SEVEN years

They made a post tearfully apologising for their actions "sorry we got caught" type of thing

They’re lucky the British are infamous for the behavior (of a large minority) in Southern Europe and the Australians are not very well known in the rest of the continent. But next to drunk tourist behavior, I personally was somewhat shocked walking around in Perth at the time and taking public transportation there.

Well, if we're going to generalize (and I for one feel myself sliding down that road), I suspect that nationality per se doesn't have a lot to do with the reputation/reality of low-life behavior by bules around Kuta. Perhaps a little, if the facts support that Australians as a general matter tend to consume fairly high levels of alcohol compared to other nationalities.

But I think what's really going on is:

- Australia is the closest bule-majority country to Bali, so OF COURSE that's where the drunken tourists come from. If the US of A was identical to what it is now, but swapped places geographically with Australia, how much you wanna bet that the typical drunken bule tourist in Kuta would be American?

- The troublemakers are usually young men. Apologies to those with Y chromosomes, and to those who are young, but statistically speaking they're more likely to get rowdy/drunken/break the law than females and older people.

So yeah, at the end of the day, the fact that it was an Australian is probably less significant than it might initially appear. However, I do take Minuteman's point from the other thread that those of us who are also foreign might want to know whether it was a fellow countryman who acted up or not.
