Hong Kong’s foreign domestic helpers hit hard by pandemic, social distancing
Hong Kong’s foreign domestic helpers have been hit hard by the
coronavirus pandemic, with the Philippine consul general revealing that 70 of them lost their jobs recently and his Indonesian counterpart warning of sanctions against unscrupulous employers and recruitment agencies.

The Hong Kong Federation of Asian Domestic Workers Unions has raised concerns about domestic helpers not having proper accommodation. It said the helpers were often sharing rooms with members of the households they worked for. It said the helpers needed to go out of their house on rest days or risk exhaustion.

The heaviest sanction includes revoking accreditation of agencies. Agencies in Hong Kong cannot recruit Indonesian domestic helpers without the accreditation from the Indonesian consulate.

The Indonesian Consulate gave away 223,320 masks among the Indonesians in the city, while the Philippine consulate also offered the protective gear to its citizens.

Indonesia opts for "area quarantine" to limit movements as infections rise
In a video message distributed to reporters on Saturday (March 28), coordinating political, legal and security minister Prof Mahfud M.D. described "area quarantine" as a term reflecting physical or social distancing measures adopted by the government.

Many observers including urban planning expert Yayat Supriatna however believe the move would be akin to a lockdown in all but name as the government was trying to avoid the term for fear of triggering a panic.

Each community would know how urgent their respective condition was with regards to the spreading of the coronavirus, and how stringent limitations needed to be put in place, Mr Yayat said.

UPDATE 1-Jakarta extends state of emergency after surge in coronavirus cases
JAKARTA, March 28 (Reuters) - Indonesia’s capital Jakarta announced a two-week extension of its state of emergency following the nationwide surge in coronavirus cases, its governor said on Saturday.

I have suggested to everyone I know that if anyone has any contact with the Lampung Governor and municipality mayors, that they pass along my suggestions to not only lock down Lampung because there is no valid testing here but also lock out all coming into Lampung except for commerce moving like fresh products to Java. Stop everyone from entering or passing through Lampung. Anyone who wants to travel to Sumatra by road needs to pass through Lampung. Stop and turn them around. Many of them stop for gas, food, or rest and interact with locals. Same for anyone from Sumatra heading to Java. No admittance. Only form of travel will be by air over Lampung and no landing there. Lock up and lock out.

Indonesia’s Virus Response and What It Tells Us About Global Health Governance
In 2006, amidst an outbreak of H5N1 virus (also known as the avian influenza virus), Indonesia provoked international tension as it refused to transfer virus specimens to the World Health Organization (WHO) for the purpose of vaccine production. The decision sparked heavy criticism from the international community as Jakarta was seen as being uncooperative in a time of crisis and putting self-interest above broader human health security.

Indonesia decided to keep its borders open and even spent billions of rupiahs to pay international influencers to promote domestic tourism

A coronavirus choice for Indonesian nurses: used hazmat suit or raincoat
Harjaningrum described her hospital, which she declined to identify, as a “level D” facility – the lowest in Indonesia’s hospital system, with most of its patients being referred by community health centres. Some of her patients have been admitted after failing to gain entry to higher-quality hospitals that are running at overcapacity.

A study by the London-based Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases released on Monday estimates that as few as 2 per cent of Indonesia’s actual coronavirus infections have been reported to the authorities, meaning the true number of infections could be as many as 34,300, which would put Indonesia well ahead of Iran, the country with the sixth-most infections in the world, and just below Germany.

How Jakarta Buries Its Coronavirus Dead
The Jakarta provincial government has issued its standard funeral procedures to bury Covid-19 victims.

The body of the deceased will be wrapped in a shroud and clean plastic to make sure there is no leakage of bodily fluid.

The body will then be put in a wooden coffin provided by the hospital, which will be wrapped again with plastic and then sprayed with disinfectant.

The whole process has to be done quickly inside the hospital's isolation room since the burial has to take place no more than four hours after the time of death. .....

Jakarta to suspend interprovincial buses as 'mudik' persists
The Jakarta Transportation Agency plans to temporarily suspend the operation of Greater Jakarta-based intercity and interprovincial (AKAP) buses starting at 6 p.m. on Monday.

The decision was made following reports that thousands of residents were leaving the capital for their hometowns, risking the further spread of COVID-19

"We have agreed to anticipate the movement of people in Greater Jakarta and [prevent them] from leaving the city," agency head Syafrin Liputo told The Jakarta Post in a telephone interview on Sunday. "We are also advising the public not to make any trips using the interprovincial and intercity buses."

Hmm, millions of people, no job, no money for food or rent, not allowed to go home ....
If they fly, so be it. If by road and you live in an area that millions could be passing through with many stopping, eating, gas, and resting all the while having contact with others, you may have some concerns.
