Indonesia needs 4,000 more medical workers
JAKARTA (The Jakarta Post/ANN): The Covid-19 rapid response task force has said that Indonesia needs an additional 1,500 doctors and 2,500 nurses to treat Covid-19 patients amid the surge in cases across the archipelago.

“Indonesia currently needs around 1,500 doctors, especially pulmonologists, anaesthetists and general physicians, as well as 2,500 nurses, ” Covid-19 task force volunteer coordinator Andre Rahadian said at a press briefing on Thursday (March 26), as quoted by kompas.com.

Tanah Abang market closes for 10 days, faces Ramadan losses
The usually packed Tanah Abang Market in Central Jakarta is closing its door for 10 days from Friday through April 5 in a move that is likely to hit traders, but has been deemed necessary to curb the further spread of the COVID-19 outbreak in the Indonesian capital.

City-owned market operator PD Pasar Jaya has already closed nearly all blocks in Southeast Asia’s largest textile market, namely Block A, Block B and Block F. Block G remains open, but its operation is restricted to grocery vendors, said Pasar Jaya president director Arief Nasrudin.

The Indonesian Military (TNI) has distributed 151,000 pieces of personal protective equipment to 34 provinces across Indonesia to help medical personnel in combating the spread of COVID-19.

With the distribution, 19,000 items remain in stock as of Friday from the initial 170,000, said a commissioned officer of the military’s internal operations, Col. Inf. Aditya Nindra Pasha.

Dozens of Indonesian medical professors have called for “local lockdowns”, saying that the government’s policy of physical distancing is not “effective”.

“Studies show that Indonesia only has two intensive care unit (ICU) beds per 100,000 people. Things would be different for a church because the pastor or priest represents his church and is responsible for any activity there.

Quarantine, now!

Restricting human movement is only possible if the government enforces the 2018 Health Quarantine Law. The law stipulates prison terms and fines for residents leaving regions under quarantine. As a consequence, the government is responsible for feeding the residents in those regions, as well as their livestock.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has repeatedly ruled out this option, despite the mounting pressure for him do otherwise. In a letter that has gone viral, the University of Indonesia’s Medical Professors Council urged the President to implement local lockdowns, such as in Jakarta, for at least 14 days to significantly curb the virus spread.
