Chinese belligerence

The role of the Chinese navy is certainly interesting these days in asserting China's place in the world. The aggressive tactics around the contested Spratly Islands, around Taiwan and now, almost unbelievably, warships off the coast of Tasmania issuing a warning to commercial aircraft that they were engaging in a live firing drill causing commercial aircraft to circumvent the area. In response to a protest from Penny Wong, Australia's foreign minister, the Chinese foreign minister, Wang Yi said the Chinese acted in line with international law even though best practice is supposed to require 24-48 hours warning to minimize disruption to aircraft and vessels.

This seems to be a needlessly aggressive posturing albeit China does not mindlessly engage in such actvitities. A kind of wake up call that China is now a super power.

It is indeed a superpower.
Give it 25 more years, and our American friends will be in for a big surprise.
Note the position of Indonesia also.....

By David J. Wong on Quora:

Australia recently sent an RAAF P-8A Poseidon aircraft to patrol the South China Sea. That’s 5,000km from Australia’s coast. In May last year, they sent a P-8A to the Yellow Sea, just off China’s coast, 6,800km away from Australia.

Supposedly that one was about “enforcing sanctions on North Korea.” The fact that China has a major submarine base in Qingdao on the Yellow Sea was purely coincidental, of course.

But in that context, let me ask you something.

Given that the main mission of the P-8A as per the Australian Air Force website is submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare, is Australia threatening China with these actions?

China sending three naval vessels (including a replenishment ship) to international waters off Australia’s coast shouldn’t be construed as a threat, but rather a message: You want to send your military to waters off our coast or disputed waters we claim? OK. How do you like it when we do the same to you? (Bonus points: the PLA Navy gets to practice replenishment at sea and other things that happen when sending ships on long voyages).

TLDR - China’s action is an application of the golden rule: “Do unto others as you would like them to do unto you.” Send submarine hunters off our waters, we’ll send a couple of ships to hang around off yours. It’s a shame so many policymakers (and media) seem unable or unwilling to connect the dots.

The military of nation's have been flying and shipping around the coastlines of other countries for decades. Chinese warships have been passing around coastal areas of Australia now for some while just as Australian, US and other nations have had military aircraft and ships moving around the coastal areas of Chinese. All have been snooping electronically and there is nothing new about that and Australia has not protested. The big difference in this case is China engaging in a live firing drill and ignoring supposed best practice giving 24-48 hours warning to minimize disruption to aircraft and vessels.

I am not outraged by this event and I don't think my post suggested anything other than pointing out the increased degree of belligerence. I agree that there is generally pretty much a tit for tat element to these exercises. I can't imagine that China would be thrilled if an Australian vessel engaged in a live firing drill off the Chinese coast and an area where commercial aircraft travel.

A news report this evening of a similar live firing drill off the New Zealand cost. Both Australia and New Zealand of late have been active in the Pacific trying to counter a spread of Chinese influence. I guess the live firing drills are in response and a way of saying, "We are not happy. Do not trifle with us."

Why don't you kids, just kiss and make up! Stop playing with those War Toys, and try to get Along! 👍✌️🙏❤️🍄

It's called diplomacy....

It is indeed a superpower.
Give it 25 more years,
10 years at max. I have first visited China in 1990 and kept coming back every year, sometimes several times in a year and this till 2012. It was mostly for business and from one visit to another I could see rapid changes and improvements. I don't think they will need 25 years. 21st Century belongs to Asia, certainly not to the US or even less to Europe.

Did several business trips, factory visits and 2 BAUMA exhibitions between 2005 and 2013.
A good example of their progress is the high speed train network.

I think the correct term is "gunboat diplomacy" which was a popular resort of European powers especially in the 19th century butu carried through into the 20th century and being used again by China in the 21st century. The former US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger once said, "An aircraft carrier is 100,000 tons of diplomacy.

Yes, don't forget China suffered a huge loss of face during the 2 opium wars and the Boxers insurrection.
They had to make a lot of concession to the West.
So they sure want a bit of a revenge...Economically.

Good on Them! I Think that they should be shipping more Opium and Weed, around the world, and All the World leaders sit at a Round table and have a (Joint) Session, Then Smoke a lot of it together! Then They would be so Chilled out, They wouldn't want to fight Wars anymore , or Take other people's countries, or their riches, Anymore! And then, they would get the Munchies and share a big Feast together, and all become really good friends, and figure out how to Create a world where, Everyone on the Planet has Food, Clean Water, Shelter, Free Medicine, and Free Education for all the Children. Then develop programs, to Stop Pollution Forever more! And then sit back and say. This is Good, We will live in Harmony, and leave this Planet to our Children, and for Generations to come.
A better Place! 👍🙏❤️🥳🎊🌈🌏

Or not. The US will continue and probably increase its disproportionate military spending.

I'd guess that the earth will become multi-polar, more along the lines of the Club of Rome's "10 regional blocs". In other words, the 21st century will not 'belong' to any one nation or region.

Let's hope so! Maybe everyone will grow up and stop playing their silly, childish War Games! Just think if all that money being wasted on Hatred, violence, militaries, and War, and using it to clean up this Planet, feed, shelter, and provide everyone with the basic Human Rights. We wouldn't need borders, passports, immigration officers, and people could share this Planet. But as long as power hungry leaders want to be Dictators, and 99% of the wealth is being held by 1%, we will never have Peace!
Just live this Dream, and we could make this Small Blue Planet, UTOPIA and be a Shining example for All the Universe to See!
What we have now, Is Not Normal! So don't let the Naysayer's tell you it is! Believe in Love! 👍✌️🥳❤️🙏
