I really miss him. He was the person that got me to start traveling and I've never looked back.

Sure, I guess he's a mate of yours so you know that he likes the sort of places you like; but I don't know the chap, so his opinion makes no difference to me.

If my mate Will suggested a place, I might be more likely to go, since we have similar tastes and I know he doesn't have any reason to deceive me, didn't get a free meal there, and isn't paid to have opinions about places.

I'm being slightly disingenuous of course, presumably Bordain is some kind of well-known reviewer but makes no difference, I'm not really interested in the opinions of strangers about restaurants, nor anything else, doubly so when there's a good chance they benefit from publishing that opinion.

I judge things by what people I know and trust reckon, and by my own experience, this whole business of being up on what the self-anointed few bestow their blessings upon is similar to clothes and music fashion, it's generally for people with a personality deficit who need to be told what will make them part of the crowd, because to be an individual is just too scary.

You should really Google who is Antony Bourdain. He was extremely well known and respected chef author and travel writer. What I meant was his opinion is honest and his reviews if that were from the heart

My point was the more things you profess to love as your favourite the less likely people will believe you especially if you are getting paid to say it

Why anyone gives a hoot what the real human 'influencers' think about anything has always amazed me, so why output generated by a computer along the same lines would be of interest to anyone is an even deeper mystery.

The sooner everyone learns to ignore these self-aggrandizing parasites the better.

Why? Simple IMO. People may not realise it at first, or it isn’t immediately obvious. It usually only becomes clear once someone exposes it and brings it to light.

In Post #175, @harryopal1 offers a logical explanation. This kind of phenomenon has existed long before AI became dominant. Consider fake financial influencers; There are still many of them across social media today. In more extreme cases, such as in Indonesia, some people have even believed that a witch doctor could multiply their money. A good worldwide example, 'Jake Paul'. Some people, his followers still believe an influencer, character like him is better than professional Boxer like Anthony Joshua, until he ended up in the Hospital in the real match (see attachment).

Another reason is for entertainment. Just look at science fiction movies, horror movies not to mention some adults enjoy watching Harry Potter.

Absolutely, it's credulous idiots who follow them, and enough people who run hotels and the like bowing down to them thinking they will trash their business if they don't give them free stuff, essentially blackmail.

These are calculating manipulative liars, not to mention extortionists; substituting that for 'influencer' in any text would be a lot more accurate.

The insidious manner by which social media firms pay people to generate traffic is a huge factor, of course.

It also reminds me on 'Sam Bankman-Fried' the co-founder of the failed crypto exchange FTX.

He became billionaire using financial influencers to promote FTX. These financial influencers promoting the failed FTX still exist today and have followers promoting other things such as their useless financial, trading courses, etc

Other example: The rise of An NFT (non-fungible token), 'shit coins' promoted by celebrities influencers.

An unfortunate and now frequent scam is for scammers to take the names and images of well known trusted business people and use AI to have them recommend investment schemes. I feel so sorry for those hard working people who have carefully saved superannuation across their working lives and are then taken in by such schemes and lose everything.
