is there a display at the booth to indicate the money remaining on the card?
So it is not and doesn't have to be a dedicated "tollway" card?

We just bought an Indomart e-money card from the little store in our building. When we use it at a toll it displays what is remaining on the card or Indomart can show anytime. They top-up by using a card reader to increase the funds stored on the card.
The card is overprinted by Mandiri so I think they are a sponsor. The card can also be used to buy other products, bus tickets, gasoline...much like a debit card.
Another way is to buy from touts selling cards at each toll but I suspect that may cost a little more...don't actually know.

Another way to pay for road systems is to apply the cost to the registration of a vehicle and eliminate all user-pay tolls.

On my recent trips I noticed there are still those that try to get thru' the cashless toll without sufficient funds on their cards. I cannot see how making them all cashless will work well unless a big stick is applied to those who haven't got the message. i.e make them purchase a one-off toll card, for that toll, at multiples of the normal price.

Someone who is going via ring road to get to the other part of the same city is ending up paying the same as jkt-bdg toll user? 1. UK has a massive system of motorways and no tolls. The maintenance comes from motor vehicle registration and general funds. Everybody pays whether they use the motorways or not.
2. On 1st October there will no longer be cashiers with hands full of change. We all better get with the cashless Indonesian Tolls or find our way around on secondary streets...using a smartphone.

Hang on, that's not entirely true I think. The last time this happened to me was when they just changed the Senayan toll gate to GTO only, don't think that's a year ago.

Just last evening, inbound on the Merak Toll, out taxi had to back-up and change toll booths because someone didn't have what was needed to get thru' the cashless gate.

Not saying that it doesn't happen, just haven't personally experienced it all that often.

Can I ask why you not just got out and helped the guy?

Our taxi was not immediately behind so didn't know the problem until passing thru' the next booth...that's how the taxi managed to manipulate onto the next booth. The cars in front of us were stuck in line.

Quite a few. The Dartford Tunnel, The Severn bridge, the M6 Birmingham North Relief Road even the Swinford Bridge which has been toll since 1769

This is very kind of you but not every driver will be willing to help.

True, of course it's much more exciting to reverse into speeding traffic that only breaks at the last moment.

Depends, can be anywhere from 7k until 30ish. I'm not Santa though, i'd expect them to give me the cash before I tap my card and let them through.

That isn't like with like...tunnels, bridges and London's Congestion Charge Zone (CCZ) are different to motorways. My post # 23 specifically referred to motorways.

Costs varies depending on distance, vehicle model and who is the operator of the tol gate/road.


I did checked that M6TOLL website and even in UK they accept cash (but they don't accept any copper coins hahahaha).

Ok, I'll concede that as I haven't been back to UK since around 1990. I should have said...whilst I lived in UK.
The M6Toll is a bypass to the M6 and the only major toll road in Great Britain and was completed in December 2003.

They are all roadways requiring payment of a toll in order to use them. Same with congestion pricing.

I am looking forward to being able to use BCA / Flazz so I can stop separately topping up my e-Toll from my Flazz card.

UPDATE: I have some unofficial confirmation that BCA debit cards integrated with flazz will be accepted on all toll roads. I will try to use this card maybe this weekend and see how it will go.
