A B747 can fly on two engines, I have been in a BA 747 Chicago to London, we had to divert to New York,

To offer more reassurance I'd say that an RAAF Hercules (C130) wouldn't be in an emergency with only one engine losing power. This is practised so much in flight simulators, and in reality in an aircraft, by RAAF pilots it becomes second nature...in fact, most RAAF C130 pilots wouldn't feel right if not qualified to land with two engines out!

Air safety is second to none in the transportation industry. Statistically, in 2017, according to IATA, you have a much better chance of winning a big lottery than being involved in an aircraft incident never mind a fatal accident.

My wife prefers Air Asia and I prefer the cheapest and the best morning departures....which is usually Lion, between Bali-Jakarta vv, these days....don't know why.

Fear of flying is a strange phobia which no amount of reassuring can cure. My friend confesses he has to have an aisle seat as he gets claustrophobia...and I thought it was because he could eyeball the flight attendants in tight skirts....

Everyone has their own coping mechanism ...sometimes alcohol, sometimes pills and some even wear wrist bands...and some resort to prayer! So far....I have never tried the last two as the first one always worked for me...:plane:

Thanks for the reassurance. Much appreciated.

My view is that the C 130 incident was a trigger in my mind and nothing to do with reality that the C130 was a safe aircraft.

I made the comment about emergency procedures only because there were fire trucks were chasing us down the tarmac. They may have been doing that for some other reason. Because of my anxiety state, I never asked just assumed.
Re your last comment, I use alcohol and the occasional pill. However, last week I must admit to reading all preys in the brochure provided. Not because of fear but due to no entertainment system on the Batik flight.

but now, as a pax, she's shit-scared and squeezes my hand so much in turbulence I lose all feeling.

Cure? Take her for a flight in a light aircraft. After that passenger aircraft will feel like a bus.

For a couple of years I was an RAF Flight Instructor on a VC10 flight simulator (4 engines). We demonstrated the A/C could glide descent about 500 miles on one engine before landing or ditching.

There are complicated rules called ETOPS for 2 engine aircraft ...to summarize...."Airliners with two engines can fly most any route, as long as they stay within 60 minutes flying time of an airport that is adequate for landing in the event of an emergency. The 60 minute distance is calculated using the aircraft’s speed with one engine inoperative in still air (no wind). As an example, the 60 minute distance for the 767 is about 430 miles."

Whad a B747 engine blow up when I worked for Saudia, it was taking off from Jeddah fully fueled, unfortunately the Flight Engineer unfortunately rushed and shut down the wrong engine, the Co-pilot lost and started saying his prayers, luckily an American pilot was on board and came on the flight deck, they hoisted the co-pilot out and the two Americans then returned to Jeddah landing the 747 safely, unfortunately rather than congratulating the pilot, they sacked him, he forgot in all the flight deck chaos to dump the fuel, the 747 was rather over weight, and got a bit bent in the landing

Don't recall Anglian's incident with Saudia but they obtained a terrible reputation after their Tristar (L1011) went on fire from Riyadh to Jeddah in August 1980 and the way the emergency was handled.
It was presumed, but never proved, that the fire was started by someone cooking themselves a meal in the toilet with a small butane stove.....an unlikely story in my opinion.

My recollection is vivid because I was on Tristars May 1979-Dec 1980 (another airline )....the worst 18 months of my career. I was delighted when the airline sent me to Boeing in Seattle for conversion onto B747.

I'm looking to go from Bali to Ft. Lauderdale/Miami in late May.
I'm eligible for airline retiree discount on most airlines (seats available) but only one (my ex) offers business class.
The fastest way is Qatar Airways from Bali-Doha-Miami. Has anyone done Qatar economy long-haul and how was it?...
The other route is Bali-Hkg-New York-Ft. Lauderdale in business... but is much longer and waiting for connections.
Any other recommendations or advice?

Take the biz class, at least the connections you will be in the lounge and the lounges in HK are good

Thanks Snpark.....I think you've been talking to my wife because that's also her idea. Biz does offer those igloo beds and fine wine in flight ...maybe I can do the waiting for the next flight but on staff/retiree discount fares the biz-lounges aren't available.

You may want to consider the Garuda/Delta route through Korea. This is actually the shortest time, if you get the right connections. Garuda has a red-eye special from Denpasar-Seoul, then connects to Delta with Seoul-Detroit-Miami. The total elapsed trip appears to be 26 hours, as opposed to the 34 hour Qatar route. Also Garuda and Delta are both part of SkyTeam if airline partners a consideration.

Thanks Chiron...I was trying to avoid multi-sector because, when flying on staff-discount, each sector has to have available seats and, if not, I could get off-loaded and stuck in places like Seoul or Detroit. Other airlines check-in staff say they can never predict what the next sector loading is like but I'm sure they can....they just don't seem to be arsed to help staff-travelers not from their own airline.

BTW the Qatar flight I looked at leaves Bali at 00:35 and arrives Miami at 17:00 +1 (28:25hrs with a 2:50hr stop in Doha) I was just wondering if anyone has traveled long distance in Qatar economy and how was it?

Most of the Midde East airlines, EK, EY and Qatar are pretty decent these days in economy, apart from the seat size comparison to J class of course, and regarding the lounge issue, it depends how long will you be in transit because many airports these days offer paid lounge access anyway?

Thanks snpark...I've never traveled on a mid-east airline although I was offered a good job to fly for Emirates in its infancy.... but my girl-friend (now wife of 31 years) talked me out.

I think, mainly due to getting available discount Biz seats on CX, my itinerary will be CX..... DPS-HKG-SFO or LAX...followed by a US airline, in economy, to FLL or MIA.
Good connections and, even if we get dumped, the airport hotels in those cities are geared for travelers.

I have used Qatar on a round trip once. Dallas to Doha(16 hours), Doha to Cape Town(Stopped in Johannesburg for a hour, total flight time about 12 hours).

I found it better than American and would rank them up there with Korea Air and JAL in terms of value for economy. The food was decent as far as airline food goes, in flight entertainment was one of the best, Doha was easy to navigate.

Oh no I hate terminal 3. Was there yesterday and its still so disorganized. After we arrived we had to wait as they loaded another plane next to us and those passengers were using the corridor. Then long immigration queues with no kitas section. Getting picked up by a private car is tricky and you have to (please tell me if you know a better way) go out past all the hotel pickups but then back in through another security check to re-enter and go up to the 3rd floor. The car pickup area is in the car park and lots of cars were blocking the way and slowing things down.
Maybe one day it will be ok but for me its still a mess. In T2 i can be off the plane and in my car within 10 mins if no luggage.

I totally agree with Ruserious, Garuda don’t seem to know where their aircraft are, you sit at one pier only to walk it seems miles to another, and trying to leave on arrival is hopeless, I think I can safely say the worst designed terminal ever, I don’t know whose benefit it was built for but defiantly not the passengers
