Aviation info.

I’ve been thinking and yes British aircraft piston engines also rotate clockwise looking at them, Ansons , Ansons and Wellington bombers, going back a bit, I don’t know why Americans rotate in the opposite direction, is the aircraft in the photo an DHOtter, I don’t know the girls address

Don't think so...I've seen many Otters in Vancouver and they all had a wing support strut between fuselage and wing...but the ones I saw were all float-planes......so maybe

The SpaceX mission (Elon Musk) successfully launched today and is on its way to Mars with a Tesla sportscar and robot driver as payload. The two booster Falcon rockets that were jettisoned after Take-Off also landed back safely and are now re-usable.

edit: Just heard the car-stereo has a music system that will play David Bowie's "Space Odyssey' in perpetuity....in space.
I just hope the robot driver doesn't get pissed-off listening to the same old song and smash the stereo......http://www.businessinsider.com/david-bowie-song-space-oddity-meaning-2016-1/?IR=T

For those using long-haul flights there's a long article in today's JP about the science of sleep and jet-lag on long-haul flights....

http://www.thejakartapost.com/trave...g-airlines-seek-help-for-19-hour-flights.html

I recall, in the RAF, being on a similar experiment for crew. We were two VC10 Flight Crew and the cabin was full of doctors, nurses, equipment and stretcher beds.
We flew around the world including landing, only to re-fuel, in what was then British territories or colonies. One crew would fly one sector while the other rested and were tested by the medical staff....and v.v.
I was told the object was to see if two crews could re-equip any of our territories in the world in an emergency. We were never told the result but I'm sure it wasn't too successful.
It was a shattering experience after we returned home and we were all young at the time...imagine the effect as one gets older.

Info for anyone currently booked on Air France or expecting friends.....

Half of Air France's long-haul flights out of Paris Thursday will be cancelled due to a strike by pilots, cabin crew and ground staff, the carrier said.
The airline said Wednesday it expected to maintain 75 percent of its scheduled service but only 50 percent of its long-haul flights and advised travellers to postpone their trips until February 27 at no extra cost.

I like the "...at no extra cost," part. I suppose they could have added, "at no inconvenience," as well. The bastards.

.....at no extra cost to the airline ........ only to the pax

'Breaking news' is they plan to build an offshore airport off Buleleng ....now where have we heard that before... I'm sure most of our members wouldn't mind a Bintang every time this has been talked about.

The idea is a massive airport in the water will somehow attract 32 million visitors to the North Bali shore and they will spread as far as Banyuwangi and Lombok. Both of which have their own airports (Banyuwangi is in process to become international standard).
I wonder if any of these so-called project developers/managers ever talk to each other.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its 2017 safety review and shows there was less chance of being in an accident while flying than ever before.

I smiled to read that at the 2017 rate, on average, a person would need to take a flight every day for over 6,000 years before being involved in an accident...who, in his right mind, would want to fly on an aircraft every day...?

It also says that no IATA member airline had any fatality in 2017.

Indonesia buys giant Airbus cargo aircraft in unique deal where the aircraft are owned by the Gov't but flown and maintained by the Air Force. It will provide a much needed air link for goods and services from the west to the more remote east parts of the archipelago.....

th

Indonesian ministry plans to acquire two Airbus A400M airlifters

Airbus A400M airlifters under a unique agreement that will see the aircraft flown and maintained by crews from the Indonesian Air Force.
The Air Force said March 7 in an announcement that the aircraft will be used to assist the state-owned PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia, also known as Persero, in the distribution of goods in eastern Indonesia.
Air Chief Marshal Yuyu Sutisna, chief of staff of the Indonesian Air Force, added during a meeting in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta with the director of Persero, Agus Andiyani, that the service was ready to contribute air and ground crew to assist the company in operating the A400M.
Persero’s main business activity is the import, export and distribution of consumer and industrial products throughout Indonesia, and the addition of the A400Ms is intended to improve availability and bring down prices of these items in the country’s remote eastern regions. Indonesia is an archipelago with more than 6,000 inhabited islands containing a population of 258 million people, stretching from the eastern Indian Ocean to Papua New Guinea from east to west, and from Borneo south of the Philippines to the Timor and Arafura Sea north to south.
If the deal is concluded, it would see Indonesia become the second country in Asia to operate the A400M after Malaysia, which is flying four of the type.

Can one hear sound in space?

But yes, I agree it's an amazing achievement. Many are criticizing the Tesla stunt etc. but it is amazing to pull off something like this for 1/3 of the NASA costs and with a reusable approach. It really is a big step in space travel, transport and even potential colonization. I think our great grandchildren will read about this in history class.

I heard the next criticism is Elon Musk's bonus.
