The authorities in Aceh – Indonesia’s only province that implements full Sharia (Islamic law) – clearly feel stung by the international outcry they generated when police publicly flogged two gay men in May. Their solution, it appears, is to put an end to public floggings.

Instead, they’re just going to flog people indoors, away from the cameras.

Under its Sharia bylaws, Aceh caned 339 people last year for offenses ranging from gambling to adultery.

Just because people can't see it, it doesn't mean it isn't still happening. They may be ashamed by what they do and don't want people to see, so this may be a good start - they are starting to realise how wrong flogging is. But the flogging needs to be cut altogether, it should not be happening and has no place anywhere on this planet in the 21st century.

Just because they are not going to be public does not mean everyone won't be told about them. They are used as a deterrent so the news has to get out there. If they think they will get more foreign investment just because they are not public, they have a few things to learn. The only way they will get it is if they get rid of it all together.

Easy. One nation incorporates two scary-a$$ words to the west: Sharia Law. The other canes people.

Singapore still uses caning as a form of punishment on a "daily basis". It's not only part of the armada of punishment the judicial system has, it is also used and accepted in schools or the military.

I think that Pikefish's answer is very apt. If it would not be stamped "Shariah", it would certainly be less shamed in international medias. Singapore being a living example of it.

Another difference is that it concerns only males, females being exempted, while they are not in Aceh.

Also there is a limit of age in the Singaporean Penal Code (I think it's 50 or 55 for the maximum age and 18 for the minimum) and a maximum number of strokes of 24 in one row. I think that Dan, our resident expert on anything acehnese, would confirm that the Qanun Jinayat Aceh is a bit more stringent. I am ready to stand corrected though.

Exactly. As soon as you stop associating the word shariah to caning, it seems to suddenly become acceptable and to fly below the radar of international attention.

When I went to school in Scotland we were regularly given 'the strap' across the hands. It was a leather strap, purposely made with frayed ends to spread the surface area. If the 'crime' was particularly heinous we were 'double-strapped' and our hands were both cupped one way, to receive the slaps, and then reversed so the other hand received equal pain.

It was rumoured some macho student, perhaps showing his right of passage to manhood, laughed as his punishment was concluded but the teacher became so enraged he slapped the boy in the face with 'the strap'. The rest of the class erupted and beat the teacher so bad he was hospitalised.
I left school in 1955 and joined the RAF.... so waved goodbye to getting any more of 'the strap'.

The military disciplines in a physical training way, not intent to cause pain, but to increase awareness of discipline and order. They made me climb hills with all my belongings in a backpack...then return to unpack and 'blanco' the canvas pack and polish the brass buckles. When finished it was off to the mess hall to wash all the used dishes. Colloquially it was called 'jankers'.....I learned discipline real quick!

I heard that all 'corporal punishment' has been eliminated from schools in most parts of the world and I'm glad...I never thought it worked in controlling discipline anyway. It just offers masochists a career to enjoy their sadist acts.
The form of caning as a punishment comes from a state of mind that has rejected modern science, knowledge and decency....someday the chips will turn and the oppressed will become the oppressor and more enlightenment will prevail....we can hope!
