A Milestone In My Life

What's this then, sir?

Care to share a recipe?
fastpitch is a (home) wine maker...so i figure I wish him happy birthday and encouraged him to enjoy his wines..

Recipes...I actually consider myself a novice...pretty much a quarter pack of wine yeast (available from tokopedia....i actually used bread yeast for my very very first batch)....bottled juice and fruits of your choice...I picked some store bought grape juice, and added some mushed strawberries, and a bit of banana, raspberry jam, etc. added sugar, stir and add yeast...and from then it's waiting game. With commercial wines now are in low 200s (sometimes cheaper), the incentive of making homemade wine isn't as strong for me, and I am trying to limit my drinking anyway (due to type 2 diabetic), but now when i drink it it's some what of a sense of accomplishment...'hey i made something drinkable even after 1-2 years!

Great, man! I'm a complete novice here, looking for any knowledge/inspiration either of you have to offer. My first brew was as you described: Fermipan (actually bolstered by some wine yeast from BA, 1-1), cane sugar, raisins, and pineapples (boiled and blended).

Watching YouTube videos from home brewers, pretty much anything will work; as long as you don't actively screw it up. But, even the most "just brew it" of YouTubers say that there are differences in alcohol tolerances between yeasts, preferred sanitizers, and whatnot.

I also feel very happy about having made my own drink (this opinion my be contingent upon copious consumption). I'm just loving this, sitting here grinning. Is the diabetes thing determined by sugar content?

For sure, you and I are in different income brackets. Even the cost of fresh fruit for the wine is something I considered for a moment (before deciding I need a bit of happiness in my life). I reckon I spent something like 15 k per liter for this first brew (not including the accoutrements). Will have to do a better job of noting the components of the next brew.

Just looking for any experiences I might replicate or avoid. I'm thinking of doing a banana wine next.
Arigato gozaimasu Bananasan, Pitchsan.

What is the difference between a home brew and the not infrequently reported home brews which makes people go blind or kills them?

Home made wine produces ethanol and clean safe items are used to produce it, where as the street stuff has been known to have had rubbing alcohol added as well as petro products and could be made in an assortment of items that reacts unfavorably to the ingredients.

Actual wine yeast is available through Tokopedia and probably other places. At least then you will not be thinking there is bread raising in the house. Bread yeast works but if you are going to go and spend the time to make decent wine, get the yeast that goes with it. There is a difference.

As for what to use, your imagination is the limit. I have even gone so far to come up with a Jamu wine from ingredients I grew just for that. I have used most of the tropical fruits available but will not make a banana wine. Takes forever to age properly and for some reasons my wines just don't wait that long to get consumed. With the pandemic I have slowed a bit on the wines and smoking meats since less trips to markets but I have taken up hydroponic growing. With all the extra green plants now available to me I think I may experiment with them to see what they produce. You can make great wine out of dandelions, why not Bok Choy, Byum, or various lettuces? All you can do is try.

Always make sure you use noting but clean equipment and not just washing with soap and water. I use noting before a Campden bath to get rid of any invasive bacteria or wild yeast in the air and there are some for sure. A hydrometer is recommended if you really need to know the alcohol content in the final bottling but I dropped mine soon after starting and just go with how long the yeast works and feel on the tongue. The wine yeast will normally give you a range that you will know it stops working at a particular alcohol level or it runs out of food (sugar).
