I know I am way ahead of events here but I can not understand how they are possibly going to use PKI in the upcoming election? Maybe someone who is more knowledgeable could fill me in on this. I can not get my head around how this is possible. I imagine they will try to paint President Jokowi as not very Muslim but not sure how they could use PKI?

Why not? They did in the last presidential election, although mostly relegated to low class smear campaign.

They made fake articles saying that Jokowi's blood line is of the communist party.
plus that he was a Chinese SIngaporean, etc etc etc.

Wonder what they'll try to hit next time.

I guess I am just somewhat naive when it comes to politics. Yes they say things hoping something may stick and hopefully they can create something to hammer away at or your opponent hands you something, like Ahok did. I was trying to read a larger grand scheme into things using PKI and I could not come up with anything, yet it does get brought up by people here including FPI.

Prabowo will be stirring up any radical that will support him. His design of Anies campaign proves that and his plan will be to expand on that. Look at all the trouble the radicals caused for the Governors election. They are going to be throwing a lot at Jokowi and yes, some will stick because their aim is at the uneducated no to low income people who seem to be bought with some free meals and trips to the capital city. Islamic organizations have held back the populations and now you are going to see why.

Jokowi needs to pick up more for treason to get them out of the picture. He needs to get the radical leaders tried and convicted on charges they already have against them so they are in jail and not out giving speeches. The only way to weaken the hardliner organizations is to remove the leadership. The campaign needs to start early for Jokowi by removing some of the problems he will face in 2019. He will need the Police, Military, and FPI behind him.

I read the police secretly interviewed Tommy, anoth villain in the plot

Maybe they will try to use local mosques as much as possible to spread messages about Jokowi and secularism or PKI?

For many people here, Chinese and Communist are hand in glove. Although a PKI does not exist anymore, often the connotation of Chinese is enough to stain somebody. It is still very difficult for a Chinese Indonesian to get a high function in army or police.

Prabowo has major issues with Chinese Catholics btw; that is his hobby horse.

Yes but the PKI\communism seems to get brought up as a current enemy. Like Rizieq Habib when he delivered a sermon to some of the Suharto clan, Prabowo, Anies and many others at a mosque as reported by an English newspaper. He also said Muslims were ready to fight against this. So whether he is speaking to past atrocities with no resolution or is alluding to the rise in power to fight against all threats real, perceived or created I don't know. But somehow Muslims will need to feel threatened and to be engaged in this fight. And maybe he was speaking more to his belief in the rise of the FPI power/status, I don't know.

There is a lot of narrative that can be carried through mosques with a sympathy towards or belief in a more fundamentalist approach. Maybe this election will represent a greater turning towards pluralism or fundamentalism. Maybe based on the shift in Indonesia society they are betting on the latter.

I think it won't be long until you start hearing from the Pabowo camp about how the PKI has been recruiting and growing. It will be coming threw the loud speakers, the military complex leadership, and the media. I wouldn't doubt that they try and claim that Jokowi is tied to this new rise in PKI membership. Of course, no one will ask for any type of proof and will just take the words coming from the Mosque as gospel. Again, everything aimed at the uneducated poor.

Prabowo gave a speach after the election thanking Rizieq for the FPI bringing democracy back to Indonesia. I guesss Prabowo's idea of dramocracy includes hardline radicals in leadership rolls and the old ways of corruption and bad government leading the way.

Again, everything aimed at the uneducated poor.

Anecdotally as passed to me some well known academic discussed how surprised he was, in discussions with others in Jakarta, the number of educated Muslim Jakartans with more conservative views of Islam.

I still can't wrap my head around the fear of communism in Indonesia, where a mere sickle and hammer picture can conjure up hysteria. I still remember as freshmen in university in US, the Communist Manifesto was the reading assignment and discussion topic for either a history or sociology class. Makes you wonder if that course would fly here in Indonesia. It would seem like education should be the focus of government in Indonesia, lest Vietnam and Cambodia would overtake the Indonesian workforce in global competitiveness. Well, education and a lot of other stuff too.

And then I wonder what all these Indonesian students who live and study in Europe, Australia and the US, take away from this?

stupidity needs to be preserved since if all Indonesians are getting smarter, who would worship the ruling families like God ?

plutocracy disguised as democracy
Google photos of Anis winning celebration, you'd find elite families there. Ffs, Bakrie was there too. Jokowi Ahok is trying to distribute wealth to the people and eliminating the monopoly by the elites.

one guy described this election as The Dragons who pay the Camels to take advantages of Donkeys. Millions of Donkeys who thought they're on crusades against pharaohs

I guess we're not ready to take off yet

My wife is smarter than I thought, she is for putting Ahok in charge of KPK, that would cause a few heart attacks

good thought but almost impossible to implement. KPK is collective leadership, selected by the House(DPR).

president can't replace one personnel because kpk is independent

possible alternative is interior minister(Mendagri), or Governor of Bali

Jokowi isn't going to appoint Ahok to anything. The man is too much of a liability right now.

Standing election as Governor of Bali is a funny thought. I would love nothing more, but isn't gonna happen. Balinese have entrenched beliefs and traditions, and it's extremely doubtful enough will support Ahok to vote for him.

The best he can hope is to get a prestigious position abroad similar to Sri Mulyani, but even this is difficult as he does not have Mulyani's track record, nor credentials.
