One may wonder how to explain the discrepancies between salary and lifestyle of some.

Shock, horror atlantis, how could you ask such a question, nobody else does, when I see my favourite police general driving round in his big black Fortuna, I wonder were I've gone wrong as my pension is more than his salary but I cannot afford a new bike

The totally inadequate salaries of the TNI and police goes a long way to creating corrupt culture.If the salaries were adequate there maybe a chance for corruption to be weeded out. However, that would take a new generation of officers and a couple of decades for the culture to change.

I have a friend who's father ended up retiring as a 2 star police general. He would tell me stories how people would magically appear with cash, cars, gifts and offers etc. This extends to family members as well. Once while waiting to pick up his father, he was waiting in the parking lot, and struck up a conversation with some other guy there. He likes cars so they talked about that, and by the end of that conversation, the guy was ready to buy him a brand new BMW. He politely declined.

It's not all rosy either, he said as soon as his father got his first star, he received a curfew from his father. He had to be home by 10pm every night. He was in college at the time. His father was worried that people could get to him through his son (my friend). And if cash doesn't work, offers of girls or drugs will appear.

And his father wasn't a particularly important 2 star either (ie. not a command position).

My pet police general, now retired and not in good health was in Finacial police admin, although he has been retired for a number of years his nightmare is they will arrest him, it appears more senior generals would come to him for money, which he gave them, anyway I told him that if they did arrest him for cooking the books he could bring the whole house down, he seemed quite pleased with that idea. His daughter is in the drug agency, they told my daughter to apply, she wasn't interested, it costs 150 million to be accepted, it's classed as fee for training and equipment, I don't know many Indonesians who can fork that amount out, if they do the need to recoup it somehow

Those would be the ones with rich families and no qualifications to actually do the job to begin with. AGO Rp100,000,000, Police Rp 30,000,000. Every government related field has a price on it.

Slight apology, my Police General friend isn't a General but one rank under, which to me is even more horrifying really as he has many properties as most other high ranking police officers, the amazing thing is the amount of corrupt money floating around the police, I'm wondering where all this money comes from, protection money for night clubs, drugs, the list is endless, anyone care to make a guess at the trillions of Rupiah floating around just the police, not including corrupt politicians

Want to know when a raid is going to happen, pay a few people off so you can hide your stash(drugs, conterfiets, etcs...). Just one of many areas.

In the past, insurance fraud was huge. A friend's uncle made lots of money from it and in doing so, had to pay at least one person off, it not more from the money they received.
