Well, we got some of the drain covers that self close after the water has passed, so hopefully no more drama from that.

    Tax planning for US Expat

Why not keep the major USD accounts in the US? Since you are planning on moving back, seems the easiest course. Depending on balance, you get 3-3.5% on USD recently in Indonesia. They also tax that 20% off the top, so 2.8% is often the net amount. I find that 3.5-4% is what I can get in the...

The interesting thing is that my daughter felt something on her shoulder, while showering. She thought it was her hair. She had a plastic cap on while showering, and the centipede didn’t fall out until brushing her hair, 10 minutes later. She has dark brown hair, so it might be a bit hard to...

Has anyone run into the black centipedes inside their house? Our teen took a shower this afternoon, and 10 minutes later was brushing her hair in front of a big mirror. Only to have a 15-20 cm centipede fall on the floor. Looking online it looks like a Scolopendra. She thinks it may have come...

    Skype alternative.

This is why I still have a business cellphone in the US. While the $25 I pay every month isn’t huge, I can get slow data, phone calls, and texts in Indonesia. It seems many of my US credit card and bank apps require texted security codes. Often at every login.

We have screens on all our windows. Only our bedroom has AC in it, but if cooler, my wife loves to have fresh air come in the early morning. Sometimes we’ll leave the front door open in the morning. We have a security gate at the carport. So far, the worst intruders are the neighborhood cats...

Questioning the Value of Cow (and similar) Milk

I drank lots of milk in grade school and Jr High. As an adult, I’ll eat ice cream, cheeses, sour cream, but rarely plain milk. Mostly if I eat cereal, I guess. My body can sure tell when I eat some dairy products, though. I had some Diamond coconut ice cream a few days ago, and within 45...

    Why Indonesia...?

I was discussing with my teenager, what passport she would prefer once she has to choose. She looked at me like I was crazy. This look is fairly common in my household, so I thought I’d clarify the reasons. She goes to a mid level private school. Maybe 10% are Wasian, another 15% are Indo and...

    Jaime C's house remodeling thread

We generally squeegee off the inside of the glass shower, and haven’t had any mineral buildup In the last 10 years. The only service my wife gets once or twice a year is some sort of steam cleaning of our sofa and mattresses.

    How do you guys invest?

I got a small amount of IPO SPCX shares in our US based accounts. Nothing to get excited about. I’ll hold on for the future gains/losses. I’ve purchased RKLB for under $4 a share, AMD, INTC, PLTR all when they were pretty cheap. I’ve sold small lots as they skyrocketed. I had big positions in...

    Pemadaman Listrik / Electricity Blackouts

When we first remodeled our house in Bandung before moving in, we set up a UPS, but it wasn’t useful for long. I‘ve heard less than great stuff about Jackery reliability. My wife went to see a Bluetti dealer today. I have a feeling we might go with a 1kwh unit at first. I’m sure pricing will...

Sunday night. I’ve got videos my daughter took, too. No other fireworks on any other nights that we saw at PI/Bunderan, and we checked out on Thursday.

    Pemadaman Listrik / Electricity Blackouts

In our Bandung neighborhood, they’ve announced a bunch of 3 hour electrical blackouts in the near future. We discussed getting a gas generator last year, but decided against it. I have a EcoFlow portable power station Delta 2 1024wh at my US home. My wife saw some 220v versions on Shopee last...

They had a huge fireworks show next to our hotel last night. From 11pm to almost 2am. I can only imagine what next year will be like!

Muslim marriage for foreigners - cultural question

Badazz posted a great thread on marrying in Bangkok, I think on the competing forum. We went the same route a year or so later, and it wasn’t too bad. I had Googled some bad info about divorce/remarriage before our kid was delivered. Should have gotten married before birth. Had to go through a...

Muslim marriage for foreigners - cultural question

I’ve always found the whole conversion argument to be rather silly, no matter what religion is involved. I certainly wouldn’t force my wife to do it, and even the religion I was born into doesn’t matter to me. I’m glad we got married outside of Indonesia.

I’ve seen women convert for marriage here. Often for Christian->Muslim. Then if they divorce later on, back to the original.
