Looking for a new full size refrigerator in Bandung

While we were in the US, our full size Samsung side by side fridge decided to stop working at our Bandung house. We had an older small Panasonic fridge that we can use temporarily, but we’ll need a new one next month.

We had a technician come out for the Samsung, but a fix doesn’t seem to be worthwhile. We bought it from an Expat 6-7 years ago at a reasonable price. I‘m sure it was 10-12 years old. The technician recommended GEA as a refrigerator brand, but I’ve never heard of it.

We are looking for something priced reasonably, with a decent warranty. The technician said to get a fridge without an inverter.

Anyone buy a full size fridge lately with any suggestions? We like the side by side style, but aren’t married to any particular style or brand.

Couple of years ago I bought a Bosch fridge, after some research. This brand is reliable. Not cheap though, but very "hemat" regarding power consumption. So, in the long run you are better off than buying cheaper brands.

Get your ass down Jl ABC or Cicadas & just buy from one of the stores down there . It is what I have done.
you can get a decent one for about 3 million. I had a Sharp but that one ended up being a bit of a leaky lemon.
The Electrolux I had for about 10 years & the LG one I had for 5 years I think both ok - as you know from my recent DM I am a collector of fridges & freezers.
The chest freezer was from Carrefour bankruptcy sale, it has been a bit crappy- & needs the ice build up chipping off regularly but keeps stuff frozen.

GEA seems to be just another cheaper Chinese brand. We have had our full size LG for over 10 years and never had a single problem. Our bit bigger than mid sized Samsung also has worked great for about 8 years. Gave SIL a full size Sharp 10 years ago and she has had no problems. I have none with inverters so I can not comment on that. All I can say is if my full size does go down, I will replace it with another LG.

The door-in-door feature of LG suppose to save 41% energy consumption.
Some LG fridge have an Inverter Linear Compressor to save more energy consumption.

For the price of those I can but a lot of normal full size LG refrigerators. Good ones in the 6 to 7 juta range. I am only trying to keep my food, not impress others with extravagant vanity.

3000 to 4000 USD for a fridge / freezer ?

Non, merci !

It's a smart fridge connected to internet. Can order food by itself, when it notices food is "kurang" (run out of e.g. milk). 🤣
I believe this type of refrigerator-freezer may require insurance (?). In the event that it fails to anticipate demand, resulting in the loss of your preferred food items, you could potentially file a claim with the insurance company.

Haha that would be so useless for me as the men at the bottom of the hill don't let grab/gojek up the hill. I can imagine anything worse than automated food ordering.

Not going to spend 20 jt or more for a fridge.

Wife ended up at where BA said we should look, Jl ABC. Didn’t see a huge difference between most brands. She liked the Sharp 600 Liter, side by side model. 1 year parts, 10 year compressor warranty. A bit over 9 juta if paid by credit card. 5% discount for cash or debit card.

Delivered for 100k, on Sunday.

Glad you got sorted out. :)

Good choice. This type has characteristics: "No frost - multi airflow cooling", "A++"power consumption and "J-Tech inverter compressor". Also low noise 36dB.

GEA is a brand specialized in equipment for restaurants, hotels or any companies of the food service industry. They are imho good value for the money when it comes to professional equipment. We've got a dozen of their 1200L chest freezers and probably an equal amount of their upright chillers and I am happy with them. GEA/GETRA/RSA equipment are overall OK (we also have bone saws, meat slicers, vacuum machines, wine cooler, oven, smoke house, sealers...etc) but my statement is only valid for the professional equipment because they are the one I've been dealing with over the past 15 years or so. Never had experience with their smaller units. If you are looking for equipment like an household fridge it's probably not the brand I would choose, mostly for esthetic reasons. They look OK in our warehouses but I don't really see them fitting in my kitchen.

Actually, "inverter" is what you should avoid if you want something easy to repair. That's why I understand why Jamie's technician suggested "without an inverter". With an inverter unit, your ref is junk if the authorized service center has no spare parts (usually motherboard) available.

I tried to do this with AC's. Recently installed a non inventer Daikin in one room at my house. I have had no end of trouble with it and Daikin have been useless at repairing it. Its left me thinking that nowadays the non inverter home products are no longer the basic robust units but rather the cheapest ones they can put together. I would never chose the most basic model again.

I've had my GEA wine chiller (the smallest one they got for 16 bottles). Knock on wood I only heard a weird sound maybe once after I turned off/turn on that's about it. Still working well after all these years I'd say about 2+ years maybe?

I'm a little suprised to hear that about Daikin but I guess everyone makes a lemon every now and then. Bought 2 Thai made Mitsubishi non-inverter units almost 5 years ago. One likes to leak water from the drain pipe getting clogged. Have tried mulitple solutions but always seems to come back. Other than that solid units. One of them runs 24/7.
