It is with a mixture of pride, nostalgia, and sadness that we announce that Coconuts will cease publishing on December 31, 2023.

From our humble founding in Bangkok in 2011, we grew the Coconuts audience to millions of unique visitors per month, with dozens of journalists covering eight cities at our peak. We also won numerous journalism and entertainment awards, and our stories were frequently cited by the biggest media companies in the world.

But these editorial and audience achievements have not converted into commercial success for the publication. Like many other independent news publishers, we have found financial sustainability to be incredibly elusive despite our best efforts.

Though we’ll stop publishing new stories at Coconuts.co, our archives will remain up for all to read for (we hope) eternity. And in this way, Coconuts will live on.

Coconuts Media will also continue to operate as a business, with BK Magazine, Soimilk, and our Grove brand studio going strong.

We want to give a profuse and heartfelt thank you to our readers. Our core mission was always to inform and entertain you, and we hope that we’ve succeeded in that regard for the last 12 years.

I also personally want to thank all of the staff – past and present – who have put so much time, effort, drive, creativity, and intelligence into making Coconuts great. I am truly grateful for your service and I wish you the best in your careers.

We hope that one day we might re-launch Coconuts and begin publishing again.

But for now, we must say goodbye, so long, and farewell.

Sad to see this go.

Was always a good guide for places to go out, restaurants, pubs or clubs in BKK.

Sad. I have a few of their older articles tucked away that shows Indonesians living public lives and the behind closed doors lives and how Indonesia isn't as driven by Islam as many want us to believe.

It was an interesting publication but I can see how it would fail to gain sufficient revenues to make it worthwhile. However there is a certain Welsh multi-instrumentalist that must be delighted about the free publicity he has been getting for the last few months.

The ones who pay for the coverage you mean or friends with the editor
Same as the Bali and Jakarta newsletters. Was only "friends" who got mentioned

Like the same winners of Prestige magazine restaurant of the year awards

True, but it is common in that environment...

So, one should be aware of it.

I always wondered how they made enough money to stay in business. Very niche market and I can't imagine advertisers throwing a lot of money at them. Great for what it was though.

Yeh it's all advertising and little content. I guess it's volume. Don't charge much even for prestige brands and it's basically 100 pages of ads and some photos of an award show or property exhibition
Even the categories are suspect. Oh 2nd runner up in best high concept afternoon tea?

Thanks for this ... now I know where to brunch, have diner, stay or get a massage ..🍹🍸🥂🍛🍜🍝🥩🥣🍽

Better to ask and get a more honest answer

Massage? Kokou is ok in most malls
Stay? Borobodur v v cheap these days 800rb a night or for high end 4 seasons or St Regis
Dinner? What cuisine? Budget?

Actually, I am looking for an all-you-can-eat lunch on Wednesday 27 December for 8 guests. Checking hotels, like JW Mariott, Shangri-la and Gran Melia. Not sure which one. Borobudur i didn't check. Maybe option. Otherwise I will go to Mulia lagi. Isteri sudah bosan.

Sounds good then, as I invite the young dancers for lunch on 27th. Maybe I start an entertainment & dance academy with them

675 rebu per person I would be staying home. Heading to the Shaeraton for Christmas brunch. 175 rebu per person early bird and 200 rebu per person after Dec 8. Even includes a glass of wine with all you can eat buffet. Christmas eve buffet was 225 rebu.

Hmm, also good option ... Pay one, get two offer .. don't know which bankcard to use though.

Take advantage of the Pay 1 for 2 offer with our bank partners and enjoy an additional 15% saving on alcoholic beverages.
