Engineering talent/resource pool looks to be on the downward spiral. If this trend is not reversed, then it opens the market bigger for foreign engineers or foreign outsourcing to handle infrastructural and engineering projects/maintenance, since there is inadequate local support resources.

Not surprising. Engineering is one of the most demanding programs. When I was doing my degree in the US, only about 60% of freshmen who indicated Engineering as their major of choice would continue to graduate with an engineering degree.

In Indonesia I think the problem is made even worse with the lack of good job prospects after graduation.

Another ill informed, poorly researched article from the Jakarta Post. Perhaps one day the Post will go beyond parroting this or that government unit's news release.

These are fake news. There are no engineering schools in Indonesia.

Examples of fake news abound, for example: "there are no engineering schools in Indonesia."

There are no GOOD engineering schools in Indonesia is perhaps more accurate?

Possibly I'm a fake engineer from fake engineering school in Indonesia.

I'm not competent to assess the quality of any education institution but I can say that there are good engineering school at least to Indonesian standard.
ITB is considered as the best engineering school in Indonesia is ranked 359 world top university. Probably not good enough to your standard.
My university's rank is not high as ITB, and I was very average student, could be very lucky work as SME (subject matter expert) and TA (technical authority) for a particular discipline engineering a big 5 IOG company.

I know and glad that more and more young Indonesians engineer are very competitive in international market.

"Good" is a matter of opinion. There are perhaps better engineering programs abroad in some or many engineering curricula. But to unequivocally speculate, in superlative terms, that all Indonesian engineering schools are sub-par strikes me as academic bigotry.

There's a difference between a fake engineer and fake engineering schools. If I had to assess Indonesian engineers, I'd say there are good ones just like there are from any other countries out there. That assessment is independent of where they went to school.

Speaking of ITB, of all the engineering school graduates I've ever interviewed in the last 9 years, they produce the least competent engineers. I only hired one ITB graduate and then again I hired her not because of her school but because of her competence.

I would say that in my experience, looking at the average quality of the graduates and the research programs they have, all of them have VERY disappointing results. The good quality individuals out of the schools have been produced out of nature not out of the nurture of the universities.

I do agree and I did similar when I interview people, don't look their university (so many engineering school in the world), the nationationality and where the come from.
For me is quite simple - how competence to the subject which belong my expertise.
However, I do understand, our HR have to shorlist hundreds candidates, then university is one of consideration.

I mentioned ITB to response about good engineering school in Indonesia. Since I have no competency or smart enough to qualify engineering school or university then I simply refer to the assessment by other institution who I believe more competent than myself and probably many of us. I could be wrong on this case, may be there is a super expert - who know everything beyond the other - here in this forum.

I interviewed many Indonesian young Indonesian engineers when I worked in Indonesia 15 - 25 years ago. Probably my standard is very low. I happily qualified some of them to be my team, develop them and working together as good team in many project in Indonesia and world wide.
Many of them are no longer working for this company (which now become PMA) and they are working as senior engineers in various big internationals oil and gas company outside Indonesia.
Even, few of them are holding better position than myself.
I'm glad, couldn't be happier.

I also have lot opportunities to meet and talk with many young Indonesian engineers.
May be my standards is very low, so I'm happy with many of them. Surely, you'll find many far from excellent.
Something that I always remember from my manager when I was assigned in a hardship location, I complained about my team.
He said, "if we get all the best people in our team and everything is easy, then we will not need you.

So all of the good engineers are in spite of the school, while all of the bad engineers are the fault of the school. With "all" producing disappointing grads and research, I guess you were luck to run across a few who were essential born engineers. Do you mean "all" engineering programs -- electrical, mechanical, chemical, industrial, civil, electronic and digital, to name only a few -- or is the "all" limited to the fields where you have hired?

Well, duh... that's the function of a school. To turn the mediocres into great ones. The good ones will succeed no matter where. The bad ones will fail no matter where. The mediocre ones with the right mentoring and the right guidance at school will become successes.

Just like in any other countries, absolutely it was by luck that one would run across the few who are exceptional. And obviously, the "all" is limited to my own personal experiences which then have shaped how I view the subject. I've had enough experiences for me (perhaps not for you) to say that I don't look at where people have gone to school, but rather look at the person as an individual and how they fit into my team and how we work.

And yes, absolutely I will defend my opinion that I don't care where an individual have gone to school to assess their competence and fit for the company. At the same time I absolutely understand and will not argue too much with someone if their experiences in Indonesia are different like @Wisnu .

Is it me or is 4.66% a low drop out rate?

I know a few people that didn't complete college. A 95-98% college completion rate seems fantastic. Am I missing something?
