Mobil Rakyat...new cars

It seems the Wuling Baojun 510 will be introduced in October.

Quite an offensive from the Chinese car manufacturers.

But: Where are the EV’s?

I still need to sit down and figure out how much energy the stop and go traffic will sap the battery power out of the EVs

And the temperatures are high. Which is obviously good for the capacity with a lack of cold winters but they would have to be cooled, esp. with multiple charges in a day. (So the Nissan Leaf for instance, might have problems here.)

Mild hybrid, so regenerating brake energy would be rather good in city driving of course. And with 48V...

There have been quite some negative comments on the Tesla Powerwall, esp. in combination with solar (7 panels of 250 watt), since it becomes rather complex and pricey. But these guys have implemented similar systems:

I would love to have a solution like that and in this country it can not be that difficult to implement.

And with the current EV autonomy of 200-400 km it must be very possible to drive such a car. The sales of the electric Jaguar but also the cheaper Hyundai/Kia EV’s goes like crazy in Europe (e.g. Norway and The Netherlands). But without any real Electric Vehicle on the Indonesian market and no governmental stimulation, not even of hybrids...

Ah. For @rabbit_39 to make:

Actually I've had several of those done in Indonesia since 2010. Just that the packaging isn't that nice. But the functions of a Tesla power wall aren't new, it's been around for 20 years or more .

Electric bicycles are quite a big trend in Europe. And it seems the battery packs quite often catch fire. This happens while using them in the summer or during charging the batteries at home.

Now that is something I would be very concerned about with these home solutions, esp. with batteries from unknown brands produced at some factory in the PRC with questionable QA...

As stated before: EV’s without battery cooling could also have some nasty surprises in climates as these.

A bit of a surprise was the statement by Dyson that their new car manufacturing facility will not be in the UK, where their test and research center is based, but in Singapore. The reason given was mainly quality of workforce but obviously Brexit and proximity to the markets 'with money' played a major role.

They will spend 2 billion GBP and expect to have the facility up and running in 2020, with a full operational production of an electric car in 2021. (No, I don't think it will look like a vacuum cleaner.) Since they don't collaborate with any car manufacturer, that amount seems a bit low but we will see.

Weird how things can go. Some years ago, we would have said Apple and Google would be the new non traditional car manufacturers.

The Mazda 6 got a facelift. Again. A beautiful car but Mazda really should stop making changes every 6 months or so. It does not help in the depreciation.

The small Honda Brio also got updated.

Talking about Honda, they have a big issue with some of their cars (mainly the CR-V) in certain countries. It is about the 1.5 Turbo engine.

In cold climates, there is an issue with a mix of gasoline and oil during the winters. This obviously is not great for the engine but worse, it creates a very strong smell in the cabin.

It got so bad that in China for instance, the sale of the car was halted. Authorities felt that Honda did not show enough effort to fix the problem.

So no issues for cars sold in Indonesia and probably no recall here.

So Nissan thought the X-Trail (Rogue in the US) could not really compete with the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and they introduced the Terra. Currently in China, the Philippines and Indonesia.

For me it’s a bit disappointing to see it is only available with a 2.5 liter Diesel engine. The prices vary between 460 and 650 million rupiah for the 4x4 automatic.

As you can see, in the digital dashboard the car offers an off-road meter which is similar to that analog ‘Inclinometer Level Tilt Gauge Indicator Gradient Balancer Tool’ (pfff) on the dashboard of the old Nissan Patrol and Mitsubishi Pajero (Montero). So the car is positioned to be much more potent besides the aspal. But most versions are 2 wheel drives.

That would be a very poor assumption by Nissan Indonesia. Been waiting for the new X-Trail that came out in the rest of Asia last year. No interest in a Terra.

Car image is a funny thing. As you know, the Fortuner and Pajero Sport had/have a very manly butch appearance in people's perception. And the second hand cars -in a black color- from the previous generation are rather popular to pimp. The X-Trail is lacking that completely although the first series (T31) was more boxed. Bit like the Rush.

Also, since the first series only had two rows at its appearance in 2007, it played more in the league of a CR-V or so. The 'new' T32 that arrived in 2014 does have three rows but not too many people are aware of that. In Europe they did a much better marketing job; there the new X-Trail was always positioned as the big(ger) Qashquai.

Of course the question is why Nissan Indonesia waited so long with introducing the facelift, perhaps it had to do with not taking the wind out of the sails of the Terra. But waiting for more than four years for an update is unacceptable in the current market.

As you can see, the facelift does drive around here so hopefully it won't take much longer.

Mazda has introduced a new 3.

Unknown when it will arrive in Indonesia. The sedan version could make it a bit more difficult for other ‘smaller’ models like the Civic, City, Vios and Corolla. Which all have grown considerably the previous decades.

The hatchback has a somewhat unconventional styling.

Still waiting for the X-Trail facelift to be announced. At 1820mm, the X-Trail is about the widest vehicle I would consider for the narrow roads of central Bali. And dropping down to a Honda Rush or the like means forgoing a lot of quality and features (as well as power with its toy-like 1.5L engine). Wish Nissan Indonesia would get its act together...

power with its toy-like 1.5L engine)

That’s obviously because of the local tax regulations. I wouldn’t be surprised if the X-Trail would only be available in a 1.6 version.

The new Toyota Rush surprised me in a positive way btw. The previous version was very unstable, it had a boat-like behavior in the corners. But the new model is much better, I did not have to throw up. Of course it still is a SUV version of the Avanza/Xenia. Then I would go for the Daihatsu Sigra or Toyota Calya. Spacious but perfectly sized for smaller roads.

Now, if you want a comparable car with larger engine, you might want to look at the Hyundai Tucson or even Hyundai Santa Fe or their KIA siblings.

The latter SF is a new model. Three rows, led lights, full option, 2.4 liter, and only 7 cm wider. Much more internal space. For a higher price but Nissan will definitely increase the price of the facelift to Fortuner levels also...

Thinking about it, the 3rd row is often a gimmick in most cars. Only if you go Innova or bigger, it allows for adults to sit in a somewhat reasonable fashion. Otherwise it’s pure torture. And do you really want small kids to sit on such a risky position at the rear of the car?

Toyota also announced a new model of the Corolla. The best seller in history worldwide.

So since my last post back in March, I've been in the Cortez a few times...interior is nice and definitely quieter than my Diesel Innova. Personally i do think the Cortez is a bit too big for Jakarta traffic...and, every few seconds you have the beeping noise telling you the passengers need to wear their seatbelts (including the rear seats...so that was really annoying because there only three of us in the car and we ended up just connecting that seatbelt on that empty seat (or maybe my dad doesn't know the off switch...). I was in the HR-V a couple times, it felt cramped. Xpander, haven't gotten the chance to try yet...but I am appreciating my 2011 Innova for its fuel economy (Diesel) and so far i think the price is holding up quite well as said by the guy when i took it for an oil change..people are always looking for diesel cars as they have better gas per milage and cheaper to buy the diesel too.
