Another Blasphemy Charge

I haven't seen any news on how this lady's appeal went.

Appeals are rarely that fast, especially when sensitive issues are involved. Count on average on 3 to 4 months after the verdict by the District Court.

It's also not in her best interest to get an appeal decision when the case is still "hot". Judges in the High Court are unlikely to take risks if they know their decision is awaited.

The rationale of the judge was rather 'interesting'. And another appeal I guess.

Remember the old guy filing an official complaint in Aceh on the volume on the Azan? They really got that one out of the way quietly (no pun intended) since it was very awkward (he had the 'wrong' religion and 'wrong' ethnic background). And now a deputy regent states that the directives of the Ministry of Religion do not apply to their region. And he summons mosques to cranck it up even more. Under the motto; Don't like it? Then get out!

Another nail in the coffin of justice here , very sad for the lady , Wonderful Indonesia ,Ya sure !
There is a long time that the body of Justice is decayed and don't even need a coffin scouser59.

In Indonesia, do NOT argue with anything concerning the majority religion (it is valid for Christianity where it is the majority religion too and very certainly with Hinduism in Bali). If one can't deal with this, then Indonesia is not the country where one should settle because it is not gonna change.

Oh sure it can....it's changing for the worse.

There were about 8 blasphemy charges in Indonesia during the time of Suharto (65 to 98), and almost 90 since (90 to 2017).

One of the comments at the bottom of the article is interesting. He seems to believe Indonesia needs the blasphemy law in order to maintain fewer long term conflicts. So for him it acts as a safety mechanism.

Seems the woman who complained about the Mosque volume which triggered sectarian violence ending in a Buddhist temple being burned down is facing 1.5 years punishment. Just crazy

http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/...-buddhist-woman-on-azan-blasphemy-charge.html

So she faces a far worse sentence than the guys who burned down the temple. Not to mention the fact that she was probably right. I know that if you take noise level samples in my neighborhood that the volume from the loud speakers would be significantly louder than accepted safe levels. Im sure there are probably laws even in Indonesia about sound levels but as always no one wants to confront the issue.

Apparently all she did was mention to a Muslim neighbor that the volume was getting too loud and the neighbor just mentioned this to someone else and it took off from there. I guess you have to be very careful what you say........she ends up in jail for blasphemy. The woman and her family would be in distress and Buddist Temples burned: that is nasty. I am sure the fact she was Indonesian of Chinese decent didn't help either.

I know life is not always this simple but if I was of Chinese descent I would likely look at taking my family out of Indonesia, if I could. Being Chinese seems to be a reoccuring theme for possible blame/persecution.

I know quite a few Indonesians of Chinese descent, and the thought that they should just leave the country is abhorrent!

I hope that Indonesia can morph into a country where everyone is welcome. All religions, ethnicities, and the many other different people that make the country up.

Just to clarify, abhorrent for you? Or for themselves? With the exception of the Uber rich and Uber powerful, just observing what's going on around Indonesia, I am not surprised seeing that many of the young ones are leaving Indonesia and the parents are working hard to make sure their kids CAN leave Indonesia.

I think it is already happening that the Chinese indonesians with normal social and economic status are trying to get out .

My area on the south coast around Pelabuhanratu seems to have fortunately "arrived".

In my two decades here I have only experienced (or heard of) ONE negative experience. Shortly after arrival when I was still a newbie (and still a smoker) I was caught smoking during Ramadan and mildly admonished - wrist slapped, cigarette out and all OK.

Sounds wonderful were you live :dizzy:

Does not look that Chinese Indonesian will emigrate anytime soon, except in case of a serious pogrom, because of several reasons:

1. They have businesses here, abroad they could not function well, or they need to start from zero in an environment of high competition,
2. They are running the show here, with influence in business and politics,
3. Indonesia is a country with low competition, but high barriers to entry from abroad, and they are swimming quite well because they have the skills the natives don`t have (or there are not enough natives with a good set of skills), generational money, education, network and willingness to take a risks.

Hmm, I’m sure quite some people would have left the country if Prabowo would have become president.

There is definitely a brain drain going on; what would you do if you studied abroad, meet your partner there and realize you’ll make five times more money in that place than back in Indonesia? Many don’t come back, esp. in the field of healthcare and medicines.

Also, often when the Chinese Indonesians come back, they end up running a pet shop in Kelapa Gading or an electronics or tool business in Glodok. From the parents. Does not fit so well with the economics studies you’ve done at Gold Coast. I’ve seen many demotivated individuals who just spend the family fortune.
