Aviation info.

It's frustrating to see that all these specials are often impossible to find in their booking systems. Esp. Lufthansa but also Qatar and others promise huge promos but try to book them. KLM is somewhat better at that.

I found there's such a big difference in prices (for a return trip), between leaving from Asia and leaving from Europe or the US, that some time ago I reversed my bookings. So first I got a one-way trip to reset, and as of then flights from Europe. Already after one year the surplus for the one way trip was compensated and now I easily save 3 juta per person per trip.

I've noticed the same thing, you have to book your return trip to Europe also, right? Is it any problem if it's 6 or 12 months later? Or have you found an airline with a good change policy so you can decide later when to make the trip back to Europe?

Yep you have to book the full return. The problem is (obviously) the much higher price for most flexible flights, esp. with Qatar etc. But KLM has now a flat rate of €150 for a change and €200 for a cancellation. BA and TA do much better. The MasterCard I'm using offers quite an extensive insurance, not only cancellation but even for delays. (Which is in fact not even necessary for flights originating in the EU.)

Leaving 6 months in between for the return leg is not a problem but often it is a bit the turning point towards much more expensive flights. To book further than 1 year ahead is almost impossible.

Same trends also between North America and Indonesia.

In all fairness Lion Air has indeed cleaned up it's maintenance act with their facility in Batam etc, but would you fly a low-cost for THAT long? I doubt many would consider.

Besides that, don't we just love local reporting?

"Does Lion Air have the right planes to fly all the way to Paris? Yes, in fact just this April Lion Air confirmed a US$6.2 billion deal to purchase 60 Boeing 737 MAX 10 narrowbody jets and has placed provisional orders for more Boeing 787 widebody jets in the future."

1. They don't have the 737 MAX-10's yet, they just ordered them with an estimated delivery date of 2020.
2. Even if they had them, they would need to make a minimum of 1, if not 2 fuel stops to cover the distance. (737 MAX-10 range; ~3100 miles, Jakarta-Paris is what? 6500-7000 miles? Of all the 737 MAX series the 10 actually has the lowest range). With this logic my buddy with a Cessna Turboprop has the right aircraft to fly Jakarta - Paris.
3. Same thing for the Boeings, it's a MOU to order some in the future. Many of these Airline MOU's never get passed the MOU stage. They are not legally binding.

Hmm, many ultra cheap and charter flights from Europe to US and Caribbean etc. too.

And I see Air Asia (Indonesian branch as well) to be first offering long hauls.

But it’s rather interesting to see what happens with all of them removed from the EU black list.

True, for me that would already be excruciating and those flights are what, 9 hours max? Add another 3 hours to that and I'd rather take my caravan to the veluwe.

Wow i couldn't imagine such a long flight on a 737..that would be horrible. Even the 5 hour ones seem like it is pushing it to me.

Our flight from Malang to Denpasar took 4 hours on Lion Air's Wings subsidiary, if you include the three hour delay in the airport waiting for the turboprop to show up.

A 787 won’t have any problem flying that route.

Likely, they’d fly to HKG, NRT, SYD and such before trying any real longhaul flights.

Wings is the WORST. Just say no.

As I recall, at Malang airport there are few options ie none in our case.

I’d have gone to SUB instead of flying on Wings.

We arrived back in Bali from HKG yesterday at 3pm.
The line-up for foreigners was still as bad as ever although maybe a little faster as more officers on duty. We went to the Indonesian/Kitas/Kitap line which was much shorter but some nice officer, controlling the crowd, told my wife we should go to the disability counter which only had about 10 lining-up. He was clearly indicating my state of age which I took offence internally as I'm definitely NOT disabled....but I then noted the sign also included anyone over 60 and anyone with children under 5...so I was consoled and we went thru' very quickly. I later told my wife (turned 60 last April) that maybe he was indicating that information for her...so now I'm in trouble. I can never win!!!

Anyway ...good info for those who didn't know that the Disability counter also includes anyone over 60 and their family/companions...but they do check the passport prior to permitting into that line.

BTW I quickly checked the duty free inbound and a litre of Absolute, as an example, cost Rp370,000...and Smirnoff was Rp290,000? I think that's cheap, compared to retail in Bali.

This is a rant about JFK, the Eastern gateway to the USA.....it is PATHETIC, and probably the worst airport I've been...including Mumbai.
In early June we arrived on a CX non-stop HKG-JFK on time. The chaos started as soon as we reached immigration. There was little signage and a couple of ladies trying to direct incoming passengers to the respective line-ups but no-one could understand what they said as most tourists were Asian. We stood in the wrong line for about 20 mins until I realized we should (Canadian Passports) be self-immigrating by machine, but no signage or instructions.
Some were confused as to what benefit their ESTA gave them as new Estas were supposed to line in a different place to where 2nd Esta users were supposed to line.
Our machine worked well and we were stamped with a 6 month stay.
At last we were in the open concourse where I decided to get a few US$ for drinks/tips etc...I had already TransferWised a bunch of money to our friends so the could get cash from ATM's but the Xchange at the airport was less than a US$ for a GBP. TransferWise gave me US$1.35 for every GBP.......and some say the Bali airport money exchange is a scam...gimme a break!
I asked how to get to Terminal 2 (Delta connection to Fort Lauderdale) and was told to take the skytrain. Problem...the 'Fffing' Skytrain was broken and wouldn't be running 'till midnight or later. The shuttle buses were all packed and by the time we got to Delta our booked flight had departed.
Not too worried I sat down and opened my tablet to book another flight an hour later...guess what...no Fffing internet! We then decided to go upstairs to the departure hall but the elevator was broken. My wife had to bump our suitcases up 2 flights of stairs as I'm not allowed to lift anything heavy.
We were really tired so decided to stay overnight and catch a flight early morning as I could then get internet. I used the hotel phone for the airport motels but all were full....except the Holiday Inn Express which quoted a rate of US$350...jeez, it's a motel not a fuckin' resort.
Back to Delta's counter I explained my predicament to the nice guy and he commiserated as he also travels a lot on his airline pass...including CX to HKG which he said was wonderful....at last a nice New Yorker!!!
I asked if he could use the system to get me the staff discount fare but he couldn't do that...in despair I asked what was the cheapest full-fare for the next flight to FLL. He said US$450...and I squirmed thinking that would be nearly US$1,000 for both. He said "No David, that's for both but we charge US$5 for each check-in bag." I immediately gave him my Mastercard and walked away with our shiny boarding cards.
Suffice to say we were very pleased with Delta and although the aircraft was an old B737 it had been refurbished and the flight was uneventful.

Six weeks later (Sat night) we were back in JFK T8 for the CX 01:35 departure for HKG. We were early as our friends had to get back to the marina to use the yacht club's shuttle-boat to get to their anchored yacht, before they closed.
I tried to get a trolley but it cost 6 bucks....every airport in Asia I've been has free trolleys.
We had to wait a few hours before checking in and there are NO, repeat NO, seats in that area so everyone was lying on the floor...me too, but my wife refused to dignify the floor in her required business-class attire so sat on her suitcase.
The flight departed on time and we were pleased to see the New York lights diminish behind us.

I was surprised that the flight map showed us going North up the US/Canadian Eastern seaboard and over Greenland towards the Pole well North of Norway and Russia...it must have come South somewhere over Siberia or China, but I wasn't looking as I was tucked into the business-class bed with the duvet pulled-up and woke-up on descent into HKG....:thumb:

How else will Victor Sikorsky get his meals?

a nice New Yorker!!!

Rare animal.

But yes, JFK is one of the worst around. The other two are better and lucky for me, also easily approachable out of Europe.

I guess we are somewhat spoiled with the price/quality of the hotels in Asia.

The new Mumbai airport is pretty good. No queues at immigration and they finally got rid of the guy who checked the worked of all the other guys. It is way better than terminal 3 in Jakarta and in my opinion it is a level that Jakarta should have been able to achieve.
