If you want a normal house in a quiet area , its achievable . Of course if you want a monster cliff top villa then of course you will need "big bucks" .
A "normal" house in a quiet area sounds about right for us.

Bali prices vary "substantially" from fashionable enclaves to normal areas , such as canggu vs the bukit jimbaran ,your place sounds nice, in the cheaper area as mentioned I reckon you could find something like for around 30juta ,but you have got to do a lot of searching and negotiating ,stay away from real estate agents and brokers and use a trusted local to help.Ours is a 2 story 3 bedroom 2 bath with a large enclosed yard . Top story traditional minahasa wood and masonry lower floor. 2 Upstairs decks and outside porch . No pool . What would that cost in Bali a year ? Not in town !
We are looking at Sanur area for the beach path and I like Sanur main street. The area seems fairly laid back. Sanur is not very high above sea level so we were thinking an area close but a bit higher elevation. We think if we are too far we might not drive there so fairly close. We will see what is available as we get closer to leaving.
Ya sanur in all directions is flat , the closest higher elevations , bukit jimbaran and sukawati around 20 minutes drive , .
If you check the topographical maps there is not much difference ,if there was a tsunami I think denpasar and of course sanur would be underwater , you must also consider the traffic in both places and population density . Bear in mind sanur and parts of dps are quite expensive , but ya your choice my friend .

I remember in 95 Sanur was the "in" place and regulations banned any construction "higher than a palm tree" to keep the flat panorama
I even stayed in the Grand Bali Beach Hotel and back then it was pretty much the tallest building in Bali let alone Sanur
Now it's been replaced?
I think some tsunami projections are avg. tsunami get to higher ground from the overpass to the sea. Large tsunami higher ground overpass to the other/non sea side of Sanur. Renon seems to be at a higher risk of flooding then Sanur. I/we really like Sanur and beach path but not the low sea level.
I realize 4.6 million people on a smallish Island is a lot but compared to Jakarta area still somewhat heaven.
I have hear that Sanur is choked with aging Dutch both permanent retirees and long time and slow moving vacationers. Any truth to that?

.
Yeah, for easy and relaxed retirement living (with still access to all commodities) the question is always Sanur or Seminyak. I prefer the latter.
