There must be people who apply for a passport and no longer have the prior one after say 10 years.
I suppose the easiest way is to go according to the law. Canada doesn't care but Indonesia does. If a person chooses not to notify them then I guess you can cross the what should I do bridge if the decision to permanently return arises.
I think if she chose to become Canadian she would choose to give up her Indonesian citizenship. She can always live in Indonesia but cant buy property.

Yes, you will have a NIK, David. Just search for it a bit, we discussed this a lot. Every person who resides here with KTP or SKTT has a NIK.
The KK for you, is just like the KTP OA, a rather simple request.
Edit: Just to re-iterate: There is an Immigration and a Civil registration. They are different tracks with different results. The first will get you a KITAS/P and MERP, the second a SKTT or KTP OA+KK. (With a unique number, a NIK.) You need to do both, whatever employers and agents tell you!
AFAIK , if your kitas is expired , then you now have no kitas - it's goneIf my first KITAS has expired while I am out of Indonesia and I have already been married 2 years to WNI, could I still be elegible to get the KITAP when we return to Indonesia or will I have to start all over again?

But the immigration staff said can get a KITAP directly if been married to WNI for 2 years. I made a mistake in previous comment about goling directly to a KITAS, I meant directly to a KITAP.A KITAP can only be had from a conversion to KITAS. If you are married to WNI for over 2 years, the conversion can be done the moment you get your KITAS. But you still need KITAS first.
You can read a forum members experience of doing just that in this thread: VITAS to KITAP in only 10 WEEKS!

Can you refer me to any quote in the Indonesian Immigration/visa regs that state that a foreigner must be on a KITAS first then transfer to the KITAP? It seems a contradiction for the immigration to say that one can go straight to KITAP if married for 2 years to WNI then say you have to be on KITAS for 1 year first. It's either one or the other.

You don't have to be on KITAS for 1 year first, you can be on KITAS for just 1 second, and turn right back around and submit the conversion to KITAP. But you have to have a KITAS first, because KITAP from mixed marriage is only possible from conversion. And conversion to KITAP is only from KITAS.
Relevant law: Peraturan pemerintah no 31 2013. I have bolded the entries relevant to mixed marriage and ITAP.
Translation of bolded parts:
(1) ITAP shall be given to:
b. family due to mixed marriage
(3) ITAP for foreigners as in (1) will be given through conversion.
Also from that article, the only classes that may immediately get KITAP without conversion are: former dual citizens who opted out of WNI, children born to ITAP holder in Indonesia, WNI who lost WNI status within Indonesia.
What does AFAIK mean?AFAIK , if your kitas is expired , then you now have no kitas - it's gone
..., therefore you are back to square one - ie; entering Indonesia on a tourist visa / sos bud etc, and start the whole process all over again.
Is it possible to get a time extension to renew a KITAS or do the KITAS to KITAP conversion?
Damn!!!!You have to extend your KITAS or convert it to KITAP while within Indonesia. If your KITAS expires outside of Indonesia, you start back from the beginning.

AFAIK means ; as far as i know .., note; these commonly used terms can easily be found by using google if you are unsureWhat does AFAIK mean?
