So, the fear is back.

The family is relocating to 'safer' places (Bali, Sulawesi, abroad), or they are gearing and stocking up (enforce security, food & weapons, disaster plans....).

The reason being the current call for (for lack of a better word, let's call it 'anti-Ahok') demonstrations and the expectations it could get out of hand the coming week. The agitation is enforced since this time it is not so much about gasoline prices or minimum wages, but based on religious grounds with a heavy ethnic undertone. (And Prabowo's name pops up again.)

So be a somewhat prudent and avoid certain areas in Jakarta (the usual places) unless you absolutely need to be there.

Can you please be more specific? Is the Jakarta gubernatorial election campaign that intense?

Sorry for my naivete.

When a non Muslim/Chinese descendant is running, the radicals come out of the cracks and crevices where they live. So yes, it can be.

Jstar, is this a measure your family has taken often recently (over the last couple years) or is this an exceptional event?

Is it really that bad?

I think this would be overblown. Jakarta people are more social media wise, pro Ahok and moderate. Also, they may smell corruption/money behind the voice of the FPI. I would not look for a major shift in Jakartans but would see this more as political grandstanding.

This is exceptional, they always keep the finger on the pulse and this time, they feel they could be targeted. As FastPitch mentions, the direct cause is a Chinese Christian governor making perceived 'anti Islamic' remarks [sic].

Now even with the fact that a FPI is not even a recognized organization in the DKI Jakarta, it does not stop them to raise issues from time to time. And some political parties love to create unrest at this time.

Nobody can foresee what will happen of course, but don't think Jakartans are moderate or so and that riots will never happen again. The Psikologi Massa (mobs) can be very strong and easily manipulated here. There are regular street fights between kampungs and street violence is rather common. (See what happens when a thief is caught.) Also, many 'Jakartans' are not from here at all but from Central Java etc. and quite many of those people don't have the liberal views you often see in large cities.

Don't fall into trap the candidate create by swearing to not bring race and religion into the race. They won't but many around them will on their behalf. This is going to be a very ugly election and I wouldn't be surprised if someone doesn't make an attempt on Ahoks life.

As we speak, there is quite an interesting discussion on the election on the TVOne program Indonesia Lawyers Club.

Agus (son of SBY) is trying to get the support of the Buddhist (Chinese) Indonesians btw. (Visiting temples etc.) Luckily I would say. That is a move which can be explained as renouncing extremism.

I read he was visiting then the past couple days. It's a nice show but I doubt it will get him much support. Sins of the father thing.

Well, that is not reassuring... Hopefully it will all blow over.

Yes I have heard a few weeks ago that there is some nervousness by some in Jakarta.Hopefully this does not turn out to be nearly as big as some on the FPI side would like to make it.Of course avoid the demonstration area.

.
Thanks. These kind of things are bad:

Recently they saw similar ones on the bridges otw from Bogor.

well i am kinda nervous a bit for this matter. it might be brutal, esp it's going to be on friday, you know the behaviour of them after friday prayer time.
but on the other hand, it's quite interesting to see what NU will do. it's going to be muhamadiah vs NU+ government.
it's actually a pity to see how our brothers fight each other for nothing. yeah they are defending their religion. .. *sigh*

Well, don't know, there are many of the same....perhaps they applied a filter.

The one in the middle was not even in RI. It was posted on a Sharia website. But they get these in their WhatsApps and Instagrams...

There was recently a professor from Gadja Mada saying, in his opinion, unless moderate Muslims take a stronger stand against radicalism it could grow from regional to a national problem. There are no long term benefits to this, for anyone who loves peace and believes in the rights of others to exist.

Ok, those definitely don't look like photoshop. Sigh...

Is there an in-depth analysis on the situation somewhere? One that is not biased?

They are calling for all hardliners to come from outside Jakarta too to join the protest. These outsiders are normally bussed in and paid for their presence. This whole thing is being bankrolled by outsiders of these groups and it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of cash is coming directly from some political parties. I can't see this remaining peaceful if they get anywhere close to the numbers they are expecting. This will also attract a youth element who just likes to go and be troublemakers where they can be protected by a group. Police have announced they will not be gun armed so I am sure the hardliners are looking at that as a reduction in resistance to stop them.

This whole thing with the Quran is just an excuse to put pressure on Ahok being Christian and Chinese. If the government sits back and allows these thugs to just break laws the thugs win and things will continue to escalate into other areas.
