Voice of Baceprot in the news

This all-girl heavy metal band, the Voice of Baceprot (VoB) performed at the Glastonbury Festival yesterday, June 28. Those who don't know, Glastonbury Festival is one of the largest open-air music festivals and most prestigious music and performing arts festivals, making it a significant accomplishment to play in this event. You can also observe it from the festival's line-up.

It's great to see their comment in here challenging the stereotype in Indonesia that heavy metal is 'Musik Setan (satanic music)" especially when it's performed by women wearing hijabs

This is basically the most internationally renowned Indonesian band ever.

While getting international attention the most renowned title may still belong to Kotak who have performed in many nations including cities of NY and LA and also in music videos of other international performers played on most music video shows. While Kotak still brings in the crowds in East Asia, they have primarily been staying closer to home playing more domestically with some SE Asia gigs. They have all settled down and while continuing to perform they are trying to spend more time to raise families now. Not to mention that the youngest has hit 40 now. Maybe VoB will take the crown. Kotak is not heavy metal and there certainly is a place here for it right up to the President.

In North-Korea listing to K-pop is ... not allowed.

PYONGYANG - A 22-year-old man has been executed in North Korea for allegedly listening to K-pop, several media outlets reported, citing a report on human rights in North Korea published by South Korea. The huge popularity of K-pop south of the border is seen by Kim Jong-un as a major threat to his rule. Previously, skinny jeans, sunglasses and wine glasses were reportedly banned.

Never heard of any Kotak, and they were never popular in Europe or US (nobody heard for them actually).

They're not wrong.

They may well be. It was before my time but the Tielman Brothers were fairly famous in Europe or so I've been told. Gugun Blues Shelter / Power Trio has done well too.

Not to minimize anything but the Woodsies area -where they played- is not really the main event of Glastonbury. It’s more a dedicated scene for indie rock etc. And the band kicked things off on Friday morning, not really a highlight and without a lot of visibility.

On international recognition; the Indonesian market is so huge that -as so often- many artists and groups never really break through abroad. Not even Noah (Peterpan) and Dewa 19. Obviously singing in BI doesn’t really help.

An artist who is rather well known in Europe and scored some hits, is Anggun.

All the plastic surgery also probably helped. You can call her the Indonesian Cher.

The latest one would be Rich Brian (formely rich chigga). He partnered on a song "edamame" that got 2 billion Youtube views.

AFAIK Anggun Cipta Sasmi is no longer an Indonesian citizen; she represented France in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest.

This was her performance in 2012 Eurovision Song Contest

I have been privileged to meet Anggun twice now in casual settings (living rooms) and I have to say she is personable, warm, fun, and has never flaunted her celebrity unlike some others I have met.

If you include ex- Indonesian singers and songwriters, Daniel Sahuleka (Dutch) is likely one of them. His song 'Don't Sleep Away the Night', 'Make My World So Colourful' gained popularity around 1980. At that time, social media had not been developed.

This is his official YT channel.

Normally I’m not so fond about the whole let’s get famous by being active on YouTube generation but Brian really earns a lot of respect. Autodidact, spoke barely any English and made some real cool songs…

Someone who is fairly unknown ‘here’, is an Indonesian artist with most Spotify / YouTube / whatever hits & views and rather famous worldwide.

She’s called NIKI (well, Nicole).

Not my cup of tea.

Not so sure on that....."High School in Jakarta" seemed to be constantly on the radio last year and did pretty well in Indonesia. It became a bit annoying after a while.

What is rather interesting about the currently ‘most popular artists’ as Nicole, Brian and also Warren Hue, is that they are from Chinese Indonesian backgrounds.

And that in fact -even if they were born and grew up here- they moved right away and really kick started (or built) their careers in the US.
