... the arrivals hall was perfumed with the sweet clove smell of kretek
Alternatively, we could have a forum where we only said nice things: Indonesian food is delicious! Batik is beautiful! Volcanoes are stunning! People are nice! Bahasa Indonesia is not too difficult to study! Balinese dancing is so graceful!
Personally, I think honest discussion is better. No place is perfect, Indonesia (and our home nations) included.

Its a question of balance. What I observe, both here, and in other forums based in Asia / Asean is a load of over-entitled expats posting comments similar to the OP's recent posting. Viz, the legal system here is crap, the public infrastructure is crap, the government and all other public institutions are crap, Indonesians aren't particularly trustworthy, hardworking, open-minded, tolerant, well-educated, etc., aren't good at sports, don't drive well, teach their kids well, and the list goes on and on. Once the posting goes up, then other denizens pile-in with similar accounts decrying Indonesia and Indonesians and lamenting how life here 'is not quite as nice as that experienced in say Singapore, the US, Aus, UK etc.. Its laughable and rather sad.
Terus, I reckon I'm in the wrong forum so perhaps its time for me to shut-up, bow-out and possibly set-up my own 'forum' where visitors and guests in RI can exchange news, comments, views with Indonesians, without the overtones so evident here![]()

Oh come on. You don't think locals complain about the same thing? You sound like a little spoiled kid who cry's because no one wants to play his game with his rules. So, he runs home and hides under his blankie. Its laughable and rather sad.

Agreed...in the old forum he might have been infracted for 'provocation'...here it is called 'spicing up'.
How ironic.
I should also know as I was infracted for a much less provoking comment than this...... "Great, lets join a forum and keep up a stream of on invective about the country we choose to live in"...
That comment has made my Friday...very funny and haven't heard that in a long time. Here's another I remember..."if you don't play my game I'll take my ball home..."
I have to agree with you L_E & ElG... I get a bit bored shitless at all the negativity, not just in here but all over the place in groups.Maybe you have a point, to some extent. Sometimes the grumpiness can be a little bit overwhelming. The thing is, in all communities, we have more negative people and more positive people. Like you said, it's a question of balance and I feel like your fall into the later category.
I actually enjoy reading your posts and input so it is a shame that you think this forum is not for you anymore. I would have much rather liked that you help balance negative comments out with some positive contributions which I am sure you have tons of. At the end of the day, the decision is yours.
Complaining about which infraction you got in another forum compared to what others are or are not getting in this forum is puerile at best.
It isn't puerile...it's a compliment to this forum for having the capacity to be less censored than previous...I call that progress.

Negative people are like vampires for sucking the life and fun out of things.
Don't let it get to you tho'. These types of people just enjoy wallowing in misery- personally I like to see the good in things and try to build on that- doesn't mean I am blind to the quirks and faults etc. I just choose not to invest my energy into misery
Life is crap at times, life is funny more often and if all I did all day was to pick holes in everything around me & on the internet I would lead a very grim existence.
As has already been pointed out there is a mix in this forum & yes you will note that it is usually the same members who look for the superior slant, or the negative slant or the dull & boring slant on the topics.
Some of us do look for the fun in life though- BUT would I wish to be in a forum full of "fun" hmmm nah
Now, about the topic at hand and to balance things out somewhat:
I feel that the airport situation has improved DRASTICALLY ever since 5 years ago when I moved to Indonesia:
- A new terminal for low budget airlines which is actually quite comfortable with a decent selection of food.
- A new toll road section (Lingkar Luar Barat) makes accessing the airport from South Jakarta much easier. It also helps accessing from pretty much everywhere else by redistributing some of the traffic.
- A new access road/exchanger at Pantai Indah Kapuk also seems to help.
- The development of E-Toll gates makes the traffic much smoother.
- Better flood management from Pak Jokowi back when he was DKI Governor and now taken much further with Pak Ahok.
- The road leading to the airport from the last toll gate has developed like crazy with new hotels, new offices, new shops and whatnot.
I also believe that a contributing factor to airport woes is the increase in accessibility to air travel via low cost carriers. There are more and more travelers and as a consequence, more airlines and more flights. And THAT's a silver lining if I've ever seen one.
Let's not forget the current improvements which include:
- A whole new modern (modern looking, haven't been there yet) terminal. While the launch has been a bit rough, this will surely relieve some of the stress on the other terminals.
- A new train line from the airport to central Jakarta. Once this line and the MRT are operating, it will make transport much easier.
I guess that's also a case of you get what you pay for. Those budget airlines offer low price with lower reliability.
