Wonders and curiosities

An underlying element to this thread is that for all the internet connections it seems that many people are finding it harder to actually meet others and make friends. An interesting piece in today's Guardian about a worldwide pattern of loneliness and a Swedish attempt to make it easier to connect with Strangers.

It seems that living in large cities tends to make people more withdrawn about making casual contact. A nice thing about living in Bali is that casual eye contact often is followed by a smile and a greeting. Not exactly a process of making friends but diminishing the sense of being invisible which can be the pattern in large cities.

The facebook phenomena of encouraging users to collect "friends" seems rather strange. Do people really feel more valued if they rack up several hundred "friends" on Facebook?

Part of the process that leads people to loneliness is moving out of the younger age group where people open up and easily make friends as they get out and about, travelling and staying in lodges.

Volunteering is a way many older people broaden contacts but there is an inhibition for bule in Indonesia as volunteering can be taken as depriving Indonesians from jobs.

The FB and IG thing for collecting friends and likes is to appear popular (and be able to monetize it) which we all know is bollocks since you can buy bots and fake followers and likes which is why someone with 100k followers can only get 150 likes on a post and me with 500 can also get 150 likes

Yet he claims to have more influence even though we know he's been paid to put up the post and rave about the food etc

That's what makes me laugh. They post once. Get their free stay. And you never see them again in the place.
How can every bar have their favourite best truffle fries? It's BS.

And Sweden is notoriously unfriendly place if you say hello to one in the street they will ignore you but give you a stare as if you are a loony

No one helps on the train with a toddler and pram etc they just tut and mumble and curse at you

Yes. There is a joke about Sweden. During Covid pandemic one had to keep a social distance of 1,5 meter. Swedish people asked ... "what is the difference with before?".

From what I know. it is the same Greta Thunberg. The same Tove Lo, Zara Larsson, the same ABBA, Roxette, only that they cannot defy the natural law, they are getting older or have passed away ...

Also you still find many typical platinum blonde. with blue eyes walking on the streets, these represents a type of individual that is becoming progressively rare on Earth. However, the Dutch outshine them in the average height of their population.

Wonder, why the Dutch are so tall ??

In addition to the historical information mentioned in the above article, there's an opinion suggesting that Indonesians could benefit from marrying Dutch individuals to produce a taller generation, providing a physical advantage for sports like football, basketball, athletic, wrestling, UFC, etc.

Similarly, there's a notion of marrying individuals from Scandinavian and Russian regions to attain blonde hair, blue eyes and tall and pointed nose as well. Good for soap opera in Indonesia. While personal preferences may vary, some find the combination of tall stature, blonde hair, pointed nose and blue eyes will look more attractive as it has become progressively rare on the planet.

For that reason, to me the increasing presence of the Russians community in Indonesia is a good thing. I know a lot of people will disagree with this opinion. But this opinion is mine.. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

How did we get from "social distance of 1,5 m" to "Dutch are tall"?

A more reliable method of improving height and pleasing appearance is to improve the diet of the average person. Look at Japanese now compared to prepared to pre WW2 Japanese. The average height of Japanese with WW2 was 150 cms or 4'9". Today the average is 17 cms or 5'7" with more tall and well built young Japanese. A sprinkle of Dutch and Russians in a population of of 273 million Indonesians will not make much difference except for a few stand out families with intermarriage.

It is frequently written in research literatures, the estimated 80 percent of variation in height is genetic. 20% might come from other such as nutrition, environment, etc. Surely if doable, doing both things at the same time will produce a better result.

Yes, I agree ...

".. selection played a part. Indeed, her study found that the most fertile couples in the Netherlands – those who have the most children – are tall men and average-height women".

And of course "drinking lots of milk and eating cheese".

However on average the Dutch in the north (across the rivers Rijn and Maas) are much taller than in the south of The Netherlands, significantly. Why? Because the Romans (average 1,64m) didnot cross the rivers and mixed with the locals. While people in the north mixed with the Scandinavian people. Not a lot of people know this.

From the name The Netherlands
"Netherlands literally means "lower countries" in reference to its low elevation and flat topography, with nearly 26% falling below sea level."

They can not survive below the sea level, hence the requirement for extra height - need to be tall.
a common jest that I often hear in the Netherlands. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

In the news in The Netherlands.
Fewer and fewer children have been born in the Netherlands since 2010. On average, a woman only has 1.49 children, according to research by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). What is striking is that young, poorly educated women in particular are more likely to remain childless. They often have no prospect of a permanent job and a lower salary. That is certainly one of the reasons why the decline in the fertility rate of poorly educated young women is the strongest.

In Indonesia not having a job or steady income, no problem having children.

20 years ago there was already a long waiting list for social housing in my city. At the time, 7 years was the minimum to have a decent chance of getting something you didn't actually want. And only after 15 years did you have quite a bit of choice.
How can you as a young couple start a family here? Just go live with your parents, they will say.
Well, good luck with that!

Wonders and curiosities: Where is "jstar" nowadays?
His latest post traces back to June 24, 2023. To me, together with other contributors, he is making a notable contribution, especially in discussions involving regulation, visas, law, and more.

A distinctive quality of his posts is the meticulous research he undertakes before delivering responses, ensuring precision in his answers. This sets him apart from "asbun" (asal bunyi), an Indonesian hearsay, where information is provided taken from an unspecified source without verification.

Hi @jstar, where are you, say something ....
