So my WNI wife, who has been driving in Indonesia and Singapore for nearly 20 years, forgot to renew her SIM A (it expired less than 12 months ago), and she is now under the impression that she has to start back at square one, i.e, take both the practical driving and theory tests just like a newbie. Surely this can't be the case? Anyone else have any experience with this? Her KTP address is Jakarta, so this is where she must renew.

Go down to your local cop-shop and ask them.

few years ago I forgot to renew my SIM and yes I had to do the theory and practical tests... And I am driving for nearly 50 years !
Apart from the waste of time I had some fun there, the theory I did not had do it because I told them that I have problems understanding all there questions, the practical was on a kind of simulator with a truck steering wheel and the screen was like a computer game, since I am not good in computer games I did all wrong, and dadaaa... I passed the test, I pay 80.000 and got my new 5 year SIM.
I told them that I will bring some Belgian chocolate next time.

There are not many processes here so convoluted as obtaining the driving license. Not complicated, but there are many different 'processes'. Besides getting it via an agent and doing absolutely nothing (but pay), every possible combination is possible; theoretic exam by yourself (in Bahasa or a twisted BI-english) or with a local accompanying you and ahum ...translating, or no theory at all. In the practical part there are also all kind of variations.

As per new regulation, even if you're 1 day late, you'd need to re-apply.
