Why no-one speaks Indonesia's language

I still don't understand why, after a whole childhood in Jakarta of avoiding speaking Indonesian, he then goes to Hawaii and starts to study it (and with a foreigner!). Maybe he needed a credit and that looked an easy option?
I suspect the latter with it looking like an easy credit to get.

In Jakarta he lived in his English speaking bubble, whereas here in Hawaii all fellow Indonesian students spoke fluently Indonesian, and not so fluently English, and of course they would not speak English amongst each other. I think that caused him to take an Indonesian language class. Easy credit might have played a role, too.
