Visa 30 days to be renew for overstay 4 days or pay at the airport?

I know somebody from Europe who entered Indonesia with a Visa for 30 days which can be renew for another 30 days, they asked for this visa at the time they arrived to Indonesia because they will be 4 more days after the 30 days of the visa, but now because they are traveling around Indonesia they think it would be easier for them and more convenient to pay the 300.000 rp for each day they will be over the 30 days, so they don't have to spend time to go to the inmigration office a few times to renew the visa.
If they have a visa allowing them to renew the other 30 days, can they choose just at the time they will leave Indonesia pay at the airport and don't bother about the visa or they should do the renew because is the visa they have now?
Can they choose to pay the overstay instead to renew the visa?

Hi Saudade,
Your question is akin to ask for example if driving over the speed limit because you are in a hurry is OK as long as you pay the driving ticket. It's obviously not OK and is a law violation, like overstaying is.

An immigration permit is valid for 30 days and MAY be extended for another period of 30 days IF the Indonesian immigration office agrees. It's not an automatic right.

Overstaying is an administrative violation. I couldn't care less if one overstays his/her visa but believe it's preferable to respect laws of the country you visit or live in.
