Today's menu:

We ordered food in today, I reckon the best local food is food cooked by locals :D
Gepuk, ayam asam-manis, ayam madu , buncis/wortel mix, kentang balado, karedok & sambal

I'm a big fan of karedok, which is strange as I dislike veg

I just love the mix of textures and flavours, spicy, soft, crunchy, freshness of cucumber & then that yummy peanut sauce. It is a dish full of contradictions.

Wow, lovely mouth watering menu.
Lot of effort and time to cook all of them.

Gepuk, I assume empal gepuk, is the way we handle chewy local beef. Similar with ayam kampung, for fried or grilled meat, Indonesian food typically require at least two step cooking process; first simmer or slow cook in spiced coconut milk or coconut water, to let the meat tender and absorb rich spicy flavour.

Finally eating lunch. Red beans and rice took longer than expected to achieve an acceptable flavor.

Yes, I know, I need to work on the presentation !

Problem of this stuff is it's quite a bit of work, and a lot of dish washing .....

Lunch today.
Chicken fried rice (or Nasi Goreng as it is called here). Made on this base paste, and adding mixed vegetable and chicken. Usually I use bacon, it's more tasty than chicken which is very bland. I like it with a fried egg on top, a liquid one not dry cardboard as they usually fry them in Asia...

TBH, I seldom eat Asian food, 80 % is European food. For the Miss it's 50/50.

Gotta agree with ya about the egg.

Down in Kupang, we stayed a couple of nights at a joint called Hotel Maya & their breakfast included a hot boiled egg, my God talk about hard, we had a theory that they put them on to cook before they went home at night & then took them off when they turned up the next morning. Now whenever someone overcooks an egg we refer to it as Egg a la Hotel Maya

When I am with the Miss in the jungle village (40 km south of Banyuwangi), I usually have soft eggs and soldiers for breakfast (oeuf a la coque in French).
There is an old, but very nice, Auntie around and every time she sees me delighting myself with that she looks at me in horror "but it not even cooked !

A bit same as first time my Miss saw me eat medium done red meat ...

I love when you ask for your egg setengga matang (half cooked) and a "crispy critter" duly arrives hehehe
