Tips for new expat Family?

I didn't get a house visit either on my first KITAS, second KITAS, first KITAP application, or indefinite KITAP application. I don't think KanIm South Jakarta do house visits.

There is always a concern with immigration departments anywhere to establish if a marriage is genuine or a matter of convenience to get a visa. Hence, I presume, surprise visits. While I can understand not being happy about the sudden arrival of a group of uniformed people on the other hand the sooner your status is confirmed the better. Leaving official visitors hanging around and not responding might just prejudice the assessment of your case.

I’ve been here 3 years on a working KITAS, never been inspected but I’m registered in the village I live in with relative paper work so maybe it happens without me knowing.

Perhaps this is the reason:
If anyone official-looking knocks on our house gate we would generally ignore anyone

For the OP: You realize the initial sum to create a PT PMA is quite high, don't you? We're talking 25% of 10 billion.

If you don't plan to live with your family in law, and want a studio or training space, it's probably best to look at getting a Ruko. That's a shophouse, it stands for Rumah-Toko. Owners or tenants live on the 2nd floor and higher.

There currently are a huge amout of teakwondo schools in Jakarta. Not much better with Karate or Aikido clubs. So I'm not overly optimistic for a new kid on the block.

I asked them this time if they would do a house visit and they said that if they do, I will get a WA message beforehand. But the way they said it implied that they really prefer not to do such visits.

After a while you start to recognise them, the dodgy looking pair of indonesians in starbucks watching and listening to every foreigners conversations, even the Jatanras guys in the clubs looking for drug dealers, Even the undercover cop with the gun always in DF who always comes up to me and says hi and shakes my hand. If they know you well enough and know you are clean, they even give you a 5 min warning about maybe time to exit before the raid and pee test.

May I ask what you're referring to? Is the urine screen something that happens in clubs only, or is that something that could happen to anyone on a KITAS?

Sorry I'm not too familiar with what a PT PMA is??

Oh ok I'll def look into that thank you. Im not involved in karate or aikido. With promotions like One pride and one fc there's been a alot of growth in combat Sports in Indonesia in the last few years and I've been back and forth since 2012....there's alot of gyms around but majority of them lack proper services and instruction more so especially for my sport. If it works it works if not all good. My life financially or otherwise isn't dependant on this working out it's more almost a passion project as I see alot of potential

There's no drug test for kitas not even HIV unlike Dubai for example

I was referring to the undercover cops who sit around in coffee shops eavesdropping on interesting people

Good morning,
A PT PMA is a company registered on foreign investment basis. I am the managing director of one of them, so I can confirm that this is not your best option if you wish to try it out first.
Have a company made up by a local is the easiest way to get started, the only issue here will be the trust you can have in the said local. Please don't feel offended on behalf of your father in law, but the list of foreigners having been fooled is endless ! Documents are solely written and issued in Indonesian language and as a newbee I suppose you will not be familiar with legal Indonesian. If the financial outcome is not a target for you, then get started on a local basis, as a director and trainer to your father in law -on paper- but make it low profile (no big moneys involved).
As others said here, working off records is not an option.
In terms of visa to live an work, if your wife still is an Indonesian citizen you can apply for a spouse sponsered visa. The process is long and tedious if you do it on your own, but if you have a little money ahead just appoint a law firm to do that for you. Before you are "legal" in Indonesia you will have to go out for visa runs every 30 days.
Best of luck to you !

Hi Dominique,

Thanks for the info. Yea I'm guessing now based on the Info I have here now that doing the business in my father in law's name is the best option for now. And no of course no offence taken at all with the trust issue I fully understand mad expect it to be questioned. My wife and I are both born in Australia so there no real grounds for a spouse visa for us.

A local business is no problems at all but would I be able to work as a "trainer" for him and would that mean I would have to be listed as a "director" as you say?? And also can I ask what you mean by "but make it low profile (no big money's involved)" ???

Thanks alot

You would have definitely to be listed as a Director (Director for the development of the company, executive Director etc...). To be clearer, your FIL is setting up the company, but you are the key for its development. As such, your work permit entitles you to work and live, and if you are married your wife can get a dependant pass from your work permit. Note that the reverse is possible too, ie your wife is the director and you are the dependant but I understand that the combat thing is your specialty, not hers !
By low profile I suggest to get started with a low capital investment, with modest (local standards) targets for revenues. This is only a recommendation, so that if things go wrong for a reason or another, there is no much to lose. On the constrary if the business is successfully growing then you will have the time, and the legal basis to start -maybe- a more sophisticated incorporation.
Kind regards

If you don't answer, they just come back. Or they sit and wait for you.

For what it's worth; police, immigration and (his countries) Embassy personnel came to "have a chat" with a dude in my building recently when he wasn't home. After establishing he wasn't in they left and left a WA number with security to call them if he showed up.
