Suggestions for Expat Indo Forum

One of my favourite threads from the old place, (which has long since gone) was the thread used for photos from around Indonesia. A lot of them were just ordinary things that guys who have been here for a while take for granted, you know the things, 6 people on a motorbike, sleeping policemen etc. Everyday life in Indonesia.

Can't that go under Hobbies/ activities Sky?
& go get your camera out & start filling a thread up... I loved looking at the pics too xx
& nice to see u back again.

Inspired by Atlantis' post about Manado, what about having a sticky (or maybe not a sticky but rather a "supported" post) by an expert in the topic. Or perhaps a sub-forum? Like an IT sub-forum with an expert (or two or three)? Is it even needed?

Ditto. Please start the photo thread. I feel the same way and have always regretted that the thread got axed by the OP at a time it wasn't forbidden.

Hi rabbit_39,

Welcome to the forum and glad to have you abroad! We could certainly add more sub-forums as needed when the forum grows! I do kinda want an IT and telecom forum (or at least thread) for Indonesia, as it is an important issue for people moving to Indonesia from abroad.

A follow up question on your suggestion: who will be the experts? are you volunteering? ;)

Hi rabbit_39,

For IT? Hah, no chance. I still need to be handheld by a mod when I need to update my phone with a custom ROM. he hehehe. But I'd be more than happy to answer questions about electricity and energy efficiency / renewable energy

This is such a small point, but it has always driven me crazy. In the PM section, the received message automatically appears as a quote in the 'reply section', so you end up sending multiple quotes when replying, especially in a long conversation, and sometimes your actual answer gets a bit lost. Is it possible that the 'reply box' is formatted to be blank to start, but then there is a way to include a quote if you want to?

I usually go through the procedure of highlighting and deleting the quote before I actually start replying. But this is so tedious to do.

AS this is a PM, quotes are not usually necessary, as people are able to follow the thread of the conversation between two people.

Just an idea!

You know what, this bugged me too, especially if it is multiple back and forths, it becomes quickly unreadable. Let me dig around and see if there is a setting for this!

I was going to start a general Uber/Grab/Go transportation thread, but didn't see a logical forum to put it in.

I think having a Transportation forum would be a great idea. That way, you could cover everything from taxis, shuttles, ferries, ojek, buses and angkots could be covered.

I looked into it a bit more, and you can totally disable it so that messages are no longer quoted at all. If you want to quote, you will have to manually copy and paste the text. While this is an acceptable solution for me personally, I much rather users can set an option whether they want this feature or not. As of now, it is one or the other, so until I find a better solution, I think we should keep the status quo.

If anyone feels strongly the other way, please let me know your thoughts!

Messages - totally- it is a very irritating factor- disable the damn thing :D

JaimeC- I like that idea about a transport thread- would be a good place to pop in tips about saving cash & special offers too.

I am trying to see where to incorporate this. My concern is to not add too many forums, especially as they are now still relatively empty. Some of the suggestions so far:

1) A General Advice Forum
2) A cooking, dining and hang out forum
3) A Pets and Animal Forum (tentatively added)
4) An IT, Technology and Telecommunication forum
5) A transportation forum

Can you guys see a way to maybe incorporate some of these into an existing forum? Or combine some current forums? Right now we have 28 forums, I think we would at most have 30. The other location had 38, which was a bit much.

Maybe a subforum of the general advice - a sticky about travelling around the archipelago?

30 seems like a good number.
The ones you have so far make sense. However if no one has used a particular forum after a couple of weeks, then maybe its not needed, or can be changed for a different title or content.

Personally, I would prefer that there is no automatic quote function on the PM page. On the odd occasion that you need to quote something, copy and paste is the easy option.

Little hitch with the smileys & icons... I can only get a few basics up.

Can we have more- or doesn't anyone want them?

Thank you everyone for the suggestions! Keep'em comin'!

We are looking and discussing every single one suggestion. Currently looking at smileys :)
