Trump is lightweight compared to Suharto. Teh Donald doesn't have the weight of Armed forces behind him and can't disappear people (yet), or silence critics as evidenced by those liberal anti-trump marches and riots. Suharto would've ended those riff-raffs into the bottom of Jakarta's harbour before you know it.

So how many people were murdered under Suharto and how much money was stolen? One to two million murdered or missing and say 15 to 30 billion dollars, shall we say liberated. And how much was the West playing a part in all this? Quite a dark history really one can only hope it never rises again. Yet these are some of the words Habib was reportedly using in his sermon.(Most people dismiss Habib as an idiot but he is someone who is still around and perhaps viewed as useful in moving a growing segment of the population).

I was in the MPR/DPR complex along with many students the day Suharto resigned. I heard later that Prabowo was gonna make a Tiananmen out of us, but I didn't know it that day. At the time the site was guarded by Kostrad (green beret) soldiers, under Prabowo's command. Because my university jacket was red, I was asked by a rep from a women's organization to wait for Megawati at the gate. She never arrived, probably due to the Tiananmen threat. That's fine, because Marinir (purple beret) soldiers arrived. I gladly shook their hands, I knew they were the good guys. At that point no massacre was possible, as the Marinir was loyal to then ABRI commander Wiranto, the guy who withdrew ABRI support from Suharto, thus forcing his resignation. One side of the gate was lined with Marinirs, and right across from them stood Kostrads, both in full battle gear.

If things turned out differently that day, I could have ended up missing...

And what does that say about the segment of population that Habib caters to? Shouldn't we focus on how to reduce the number of that segment of the population? It seems like madrasah / pesantren are taking the place of already inadequate and substandard primary and secondary education system in Indonesia. Granted that some of those pesantrens might churn out high quality graduates, but those are the exceptions. Majority of them are run as for-profit business, no different from private or charter schools, since they do receive funds from government. Their graduates being fully educated in religious studies and not much else, would turn around and become ustaz and habibs. Truly a wonderful system.
