So, the new Energy and Minerals Minister may be a US Citizen

President Widodo has just appointed Arcandra Tahar as the Deputy Energy Minister...a demotion from when he was the Minister a few months ago, when his citizenship was in dispute.
He also appointed Ignacious Jonan as the Minister of Energy.... the Minister of Transport he fired under the last shuffle in July.

This is such a pathetic face-saving political exercise....Tahar is clearly the man for the top-job....look at his credentials.

He may also have to worry about the consequences of reinstating his Indonesian citizenship. Reaffirming allegiance to a foreign state is normally enough to trigger a loss of U.S. citizenship.

Also, to think a PHD oil and gas consultant with 20 years of experience and owns multiple patents in the U.S. could make $160,000 a year or have a net worth of $2 mil is highly likely. That would make him liable to a lot of taxes and possible prosecution and extra steps before he can legally relinquish his U.S. citizenship.

This is such a confusing decision, I can't make heads or tails of it.

1) If Jonan was bad Transportation Minister, he will undoubtedly be a worse ESDM minister. Jonan was previously a much lauded director of PT KAI, the national rail company, so at least transportation was his background.

2) I don't think Arcandra should have been reappointed anything. He has shown very poor judgement in the events around the citizenship dispute, in particular his "Padang face" comment.

However, if there is such a lack of talent in Indonesia that they can't find anyone with technical expertise for the job, then a deputy position is good because he can provide the technical guidance to his boss (the minister), who will exercise the judgement he has shown as lacking.

Uncle Sam doesn't let people just walk away that easily.

He WAS successful in relinquishing his American Citizenship and HAS reverted to his original RI Citizenship under the reasons Atlantis has stated on this thread.

That's why he has been appointed...my contention is he should have been re-instated to be the Minister of Energy, as he was before. He is eminently suited, except for this issue over his citizenship.
However, a question could be asked of any 'deal' he may have been promised by Gen (retd) Luhut (Adviser to the President and Tahar's sponsor ) before he returned to Indonesia.
This could simply be a typical face-saving exercise 'till the issue is 'OFF the burner' and he is re-instated to the 'top-job' and Jonan is compensated for his loyalty.

Check this link on what Luhut owns...Wiki..." After retiring from military, in 2004 he founded Toba Sejahtra Group, a fast-growing group with three core activities: natural resources (oil, gas and mining), electricity generation (coal, gas and geothermal) and agriculture."

I guess Arcandra is the most competent he (Jokowi) could find? But he needede a public slap on the wrist. :nono: So now we know who will really run the ministry.

Yes, Arcandra will run it and Jonan will get the credit to help him move on in the future to something else he isn't qualified to do. This has to be some kind of favor owed a political party of a payback of some kind to bring Jonan back into the picture. Then again, when did Ministers ever need to be qualified in the fields they were put over.

Giving up US Citizenship isn't free. Cost has gone up a lot. Who paid that fine?

I beg to be different.
Actually I'm questioning the competencies of AT for minister level. Somebody (not very difficult to know) has found him and proposed his name to Jokowi.
I will not deny he's good engineer - a Phd from reputable US university; having some patents for very specialised area of engineering.
But with only owning a very small company(USD 160K per year is not big in USA, I earn more than him) which never get any major contact from any oil and gas industry, is a bit too far for a minister position.
his linkedin contacts before he was appointed as minister would tell what is his level.
If he apply a job in oil and gas company, I don't think he can get a position better than department manager / supervisor. On the paper, He is not be qualified to hold operation and production area as his competency is not enough.
I'm a supporter of Jokowi, but appointment of AT prove somebody is playing behind his back.

and what he did re. masela is another joke

Do you have someone else in mind to be the Minister of Energy?

Wisnu for minister!

That whole onshore no offshore ah no onshore discussion makes again clear that those ministers don't collaborate and that for new projects not even all factors (local economy, environment) are considered. Or decisions just get overruled. And that's even worse. No wonder the country can not really improve its reputation abroad.

Not interested to be minister.
Small salary, not enough day leave.
Seriously, few years ago I was offered a position - not a minister, but two level below. I refuesd it.
My friend took, and he had hard time with kpk.

It seems that the group of people both smart enough for the job, and dumb enough to actually take it is a very small set.....

They don't seem to be so easy over there either:

To be eligible for Egyptian citizenship, you must have lived in the country for a minimum of 10 consecutive years, and you must be over 21 years of age. You cannot have a criminal record, and you must be able to prove that you are mentally sound and have no serious physical disabilities that would make you “a burden on the state.” You must be able to demonstrate competency with Arabic and prove that you have a legal means of earning a living.

Engineering prowess and administrative acumen are different skill sets; what is more, the competencies put up as necessary in a ministerial candidate count for little. What seems to most often lead to success is political savvy i.e. people skills.

Do not see either.
