I realized the other day that I have never actually seen an adult Muslim read a book, ...

I think this is a prejudice .

Reading for pleasure is just not part of the culture.

Each person may love doing different things . I don't believe love for books is related to a culture of a country .
I did read books (but not for pleasure) when in school and I still do read , but articles , and also not for pleasure but for getting knowledge .

I'm sure this is a reflection of how poor the education system is ...

Although (from what I heard) the education in Indonesia seems not good enough , I also disagree that it is related to the lack of love for books .

Reading is necessary but I don't consider reading books* as something important for the majority of us , and in my view it is a lot more efficient for students in general to read short stories/articles instead of books .

I didn't bring many books to our hut in Bali because they had to share space with our memorabilia. Some, including our children's books, are at home in Bogor. Here are some of them.

I had many more but didn't brought them over.
They are in one of the metallic trunks in BKK, at my ex or kids house.
In the past I had plenty magazines also. About cars, 4WD, old trucks etc...
40 years ago I had a nice collection of the NAM magazine, about the VN war.

I personally don't like social media and think that it is not good for students . To compete with the attention smartphones get from students , education need to change , it is too boring (it was to me , when I didn't have distractions like social media , video games , TV , and FM radio) .

So how well equipped are teachers coping with all of this and what then are the implications for training of future teachers?

I saw an AI vendor say (in the TV) that their AI system will help teachers to provide personalized teaching program to each student (the AI system providing the basic teaching) . I don't know if it will work , but it is probably better than the traditional way .

Long ago , I thought governments should hire the best teachers in the country , record their lessons in video and then distribute to all schools in DVD/video discs (for example) , so schools would show/lend these videos to the students .

Don’t forget that FB has practically been the death blow for forums like this one.

The Historical, Automotive, Watch, Timber work, Embroiding, Skiing, …. just to name a few forums and websites have practically all become obsolete. Just start a free FB group. And if you want to sell or explain something, start your YT channel.

The people nowadays go to a Sanur / Seminyak / Canggu / Jimbaran community on FB with their questions instead of looking here for answers. Many foreigners in Indonesia have no idea this forum exists.

TikTok has matured a lot btw. Much less dancing girls of 12 years old but now they have marketplaces etc. Major competition for something like IG.

I know only one Facebook group from Bali that provides similar information that we provide here .

By comparing I can't understand why people would prefer Facebook instead of Forums like this . Forums are more organized for questions/answers , seems (to me) a lot better platform for this specific function (or is it just because I am not used to Facebook ?) .

Now 36.000-46.000 members is not that bad. Let alone the 143.000 of a certain Canggu group. Obviously many disappear after their stay but we see the same here on this forum.

Besides visa and stay permits etc it is often used for “where do I find …”.

Real estate searches or offerings is very popular also. (No Rumah or Rumah123 or Trovit.) And of course about doggies in the lost and found.
