Seeking Project/Program Mgmt or Consultant Position in JKT

Hello,

My name is Philip Mok, and I am an American who is seeking an engineering, construction, or consulting position in Jakarta, ideally Jakarta Selatan. My wife is Indonesian from South Jakarta, and we may move to Indonesia to raise a family.

I have worked in the engineering and construction industry since 2011 (15 years) in positions of increasing responsibility, and have worked for global firms such as Daewoo, Samsung, AECOM, and Jacobs. Currently, I manage a portfolio of construction projects in the $15-20 million range for the US military in Hawaii. My first project was the $54 billion Chevron Gorgon LNG project, where I managed sea modular transportation of the LNG facility modules from various shipyards in Asia (including Batam) to the project site on Barrow Island, Australia. I have also worked on petrochemical (Texas), water/wastewater (Atlantic coast and Asia), rail/transit (NYC area), aviation/airport/airfield (NYC area and Tyndall AFB), ports/marine (Asia & Guam) and geothermal megaprojects and programs (Iceland), so I am flexible on the types of projects and programs I can manage.

Ideally, I would continue to be a Project/Program Manager for a large project for a firm like Fluor, AECOM, Jacobs, Black & Veatch, KBR, VE Gernova, or McDermott. My Indonesian speaking ability is elementary, but improving (I'm taking lessons). I am also open to infrastructure advisory positions with consulting firms, whether MBB or Big 4. I would appreciate any referrals to hiring managers or advice as to where I can find expat positions.

If you want to work in Indonesia while maintaining an expat-level salary similar to what you earn in the U.S., I’d recommend trying to find out whether your current company or any of the companies you mentioned in your first post has a branch office in Indonesia. The best option would be to pursue a secondment or relocation opportunity with your current employer, if there’s a suitable vacancy available. Alternatively, you can apply to another company from abroad through their headquarters, global recruiters, headhunters or the like.

If you apply directly within Indonesia or to local companies, chances are you’ll be offered a local salary or only slightly better. I’m sure you’ve already researched what local professionals in similar roles earn. The exception would be if you’re exceptionally fortunate or have unique skills or connections that few others possess.
