Retiring to Bali with my Harley

January 2024 bought a 2005 V-Rod Harley and asked my mate to customise it for me so I could ride it in UK when I returned from 6 month Indonesia trip. I didn't know I was going to fall in love with Bali and want to live there. Can anyone please advice me how I can get my bike out there without massive expense. Dismantling and boxing up is not a problem, but can I register it for road use in Bali. Thank you

Can't speak for Indonesian law but to do the same thing in Thailand is possible with a 300% import tax plus fees for US motorbikes. Some of that you get a receipt for and some of it you don't. I know a few people that actually still did it. I have a feeling that you would be looking at something similar here if it's possible. I have seen much less Harleys in Indonesia than in Thailand though so I feel confident there is a reason.

I have never been to Bali so I don't know what the roads are like.
If they are anything like the places I've been to in Java, a HD is not a very good choice.
Can you get parts in Indonesia?
Indonesia used to have very high import taxes - Are they still bad?
Can you register a foreign bike here, and what taxes will you pay every year?
What about a licence? I googled big bike and it seems you need a different ticket than people on little bikes have.
I don't drive here but I understand you need a local test because an international licence can only be used for a limited time.

Contact these guys :

Note : there is a Harley dealer here :

  • Import operation : very, very expensive.
  • Falling in love : very expensive, and plenty headache.

Good luck !

Unless you are Johnny Cash, and “doing it one piece a time”, you are highly unlikely to be able to import a used vehicle at a reasonable price.

Why not sell the one you have and buy again in Bali. Join the Bali Harley Davidson Club, chances are someone can give you advice on where to find an older model.
This is the way.

You could likely buy at least TWO used Harleys for the cost and hassle of importing your own hog.

Forget it.

In Indonesia there are only three areas where a second hand vehicle can be imported. With a lot of restrictions and consequences. Also don’t believe the BS about getting it via an embassy or so.

But if you’re a bit of a risk taker; many of the bigger bikes (>700cc) that you see driving around, are imported as parts and reassembled. They have or no or false paperwork. And every occasion you get checked it’s paying time….

Certainly has so far. Guess he just doesn't want to hear it's a fool idea and in the end could cost him thousands and still not end up with his Harley. Evidently it's time to decide just what he loves more, the Harley or the opportunity to live in Bali.

IMHO both are overrated and could be replaced with other things, places. 😂😉
That's just me though... .

Cheers, in parts and reassemble was my thinking. It's turning into a real headache, I haven't even ridden her yet, 2 weeks off completion. I can't stay here, learning for the first time "I'm a far right racist thug" but sounds like I got to give my bike up to get out. GUTTED

Just how does one suddenly learn they are a far right racist thug and why would they even think they would live comfortably in a foreign country. Especially the most liberal area of that country?

"That was also sarcasm since apparently now we’re saying whenever we do it."

For 61 yrs I had no idea or clue, that I was the evil person my prime minister informed me (and the majority of the British people) I and we are. I quote "far right racist thugs". Simply because we love our country. I cannot live in such a country, I can however live in Bali, I fell in love with the place and the people, I have many friends, families, and a wonderful English speaking church community waiting for me to return.
Good luck British people, your going to need it.

Mmmm....not sure what to think about this ?
Maybe you need a more sober and realistic approach to all this....

But if you like dramatization, you will be served plenty of it in Asia 😁😁
