They don't pay taxes now. What makes you think they will start for this? Put a tax on things with high caloric counts and the back street suppliers will just move in with untaxed products made in the comfort of their own dingy kitchens.

The comment was mostly tongue-in-cheek.

Still, I am reminded of the frequent police motorcycle roadblocks to check for papers and helmets. Most people do seems to wear helmets. Perhaps if the Carabinieri set up at the mall entrance with a weight scale and steel tape to measure height....

Once the cops began to fine folks carrying excess pounds for their height, maybe collective tonnage would begin to diminish. Hiding ill gotten cash seems to be well practiced, but what's the work-around to conceal that which is with you everywhere you go?

There was talk by airlines in Australia a few years ago of taking a persons Body Mass Index into account (The Fat Tax) which I heard nothing more about, but upon googling it seems some airlines in other countries are doing just that.
