Plastic recycling (precious plastic)

I'm currently working on a project that brings plastic recycling to the public. Usually it's done by companies and we have little to no control with what gets produced, so it gives the public a chance to do what they want with plastic.

A very generous and kind Dutchman created blueprints for four machines that are used for recycling plastic. www.preciousplastic.com is the site, check out their videos!

Currently, I am working on building the Injection machine. I was going to try the shredder first, but due to difficulty sourcing parts (now solved), I figure I can shred my own plastic bottles for now.

I hope to make all four machines and have them located at Universitas Multimedia Nusantara in Gading Serpong (Tangerang). They're providing space, electricity, and eventually materials (lots of students, lots of plastic bottles).

If I'm able to get some rhythm, I can start producing these for other people/groups and hopefully pull in some money through creating useful items with the plastic.

What do you guys think about this? Useful? Useless? Why bother?

Interesting? I was asked before by a Japanese company to source and sent the raw plastic waste to Vietnam for them to produce plastic resin. Checked, asked and it was nearly impossible to purchase enough clean recyclable plastic waste for export as this biz is controlled by some.....Mxfxx

Anyway on a small scale should be possible n do update how it develop as it progress.

In case u need some clean plastic bottle etc. Not free but I know many people donate to this charity organisation every weekend. So not sure how u can collect those sorted waste from them and cost. Do check and help the charity too.

Brilliant idea! We have been discussing something similar for a couple of years now as we watch our beautiful, clear lake getting more and more choked. We organise collections and sweeps but seem to be fighting a losing battle. Up to now we sell it to the recycler, I am not quite sure on the details of this as I don't handle it, it makes no money really just keeps us in gloves & tea so I would be super interested in following your progress. Setting up a plant would be ideal here, cottage industry kinda thing and good for the local economy and environment.

Oh very cool, Rainman!

I had a plastic recycling expert join in on the initial meeting we had for this project. His concern was sourcing the plastic for the same reason as you stated above...is mafia a bad word? But is usually limited to commercial and industrial environments,quite possibly the easiest to collect large and clean amounts of plastic.

Clean and clear plastic bottles are the most valuable. Colored reduces the value. Local recyclers might have lots of plastic, but it's not free. (Un?)fortunately I have a rather large stockpile of plastic bottles saved for probably 2-3 years.

As for dirty plastic, I'm going to see what I can do with it. It's not useless, just need to be clever in what it's used for.

Very useful! Indonesia has a huge problem with solid waste. Anything to reduce the amount of landfill is a positive step.
