Good morning all. Has anyone bought one of those USB picture sticks which are supposed to search through your computer files and download all pics in an orderly fashion onto a the USB stick? I have read varying reviews with some suggesting they don't really work. I would be most appreciative if a recommenced brand picture stick could be suggested. I see them advertised on Tokopedia with prices from $6 to $70? Thanks.

Never heard of one that will do that and automatically sounds impossible. A program of some kind will need to be run and who knows what is really in that program. Even sticking an unknown USB drive into your computer sounds like a bad idea to me. I am very skeptical of doing something like this if you couldn't tell.

It helps to be a computer nerd, which I am not, and a level of scepticism about anything to do with the internet and computers, it seems, is essential. The special purpose photo sticks have software built into the USB. In the meantime, looking at more reviews I see specialists expressing their reservations and one recommending an easily available program called XNView MP which is free but it also seems to require a pretty sound grasp of computer systems which is why the Photo stick looks to attractive.

Everything you are writing screams red flag to me. Do you do any banking etc on that computer? Pay with credit cards for things online? You will basically be installing a very unknown piece of software on your computer which could give them future access to everything.

How about just try (presuming windows 10 pc)
Open file explorer. on the right corner you will see a search bubble. Type this in kind:=picture and hit enter.
The you can select all the files it shows and copy them on to a clean usb or into a cloud storage (this is better).

Aren't most pics jpeg?
And you should have a file or folder already for photo on the computer
Like downloads, documents, security centre etc

Or make a new folder "pics"
Then search for jpeg files
Copy them all across
At least then all of them in one place
Copy that to a new blank USB you buy from a normal store

To find pictures inside a folder on your PC, here is what you do:
1.
Go to a folder like "Documents" or any other folder you have on your PC
Type in the search bar (upper right side of your PC-screen): *.jpeg
It will show you all the files with extension JPEG.
Select all
Then download the files on a USB-stick
2.
Repeat this for any other folder e.g. "Download"

Btw you can repeat the above, also for *.png

As a person with Gbs of photo files both jpeg and raw, they don't make a USB stick big enough. Would need to be a 2 Tb hard drive. Oh wait, it is. There are programs out there that can scan your computer and copy your photo files. I have never used one so can't give you a name.

If you want to have all photos in one folder with sub folders I hope, simply go through your various files and move them to where you want them. Find the photos, highlight them with a left click, hold down Ctrl and left click on each one to highlight or hold down shift and click on the first and last photo in a row to choose them all. Left click on them and hold. Drag to new file. Release. Wait for files to move then continue. If the files you are moving go into the destination folder but are still where you found them, you can delete them. Keep going until you find them all.

Thanks for the tips. With dozens of folders, not to mention pics tucked away in emails, it will take several rainy days to go through as suggested and dragging to a new folder. The notion of just use a special purpose USB stick in the computer and let it do all the work seemed very attractive. But thanks again anyway.

Important to organize you directory / folders / subfolders / subsubfolders... properly from the start.

A small portion of my "picture" folder :

A step higher to the root, my directory :

@harryopal1 ... I saw some videos online regarding photo sticks ... pretty cool gadgets.
I would say (because there aren't many rainy days in Bali😎) go ahead, but check out these tips first:

However, I prefer manually ... to copy photos to a USB, so I am more in control.
Nowadays, there are pretty big USB sticks (1TB) out there.

On top of that I also copy files to the cloud. I have a subscription to a stack in a private data center or better said from a colocation provider.

And on top of that I also sync with OneDrive (MicroSoft) and as far as I see ... pictures, screenshots and videos in OneDrive are sorted out automatically. But I think Google and Apple clouds do a better job.
