As was said before the validity / expiry of your pp is largely irrelevant if you don't plan to leave indonesia as long as your visa is legal. But of course you should apply for a new one.

At least then you have proof you have actually applied for it. I don't believe it will take a year.

UK HMPO is open and processing issuing new passports. I just got a new one weeks ago.

But apply for it now.
That's the first step

Your kitap is still valid and legal. Once the new passport comes then migrate the visa across and / or renew your kitap into the new pp

But you must apply for a new pp immediately

Define the restrictions? Can the SA Embassy officials not leave Indonesia for government business and return? I understand you can't go back and do an emergency passport renewal, but surely they can. As Snpark said that is a bit daft.

I think the immigration lawyer will tell you they can't overlook it. You will need your passport for a new visa or applying for citizenship.

This is my suggestion: Apply for the new passport so it doesn't end up being one of the very last ones, make a copy of everything, get an official letter from the embassy explaining the issue with the passport.

You have 1.5 years before your visa expires so why are you waiting? Move it move move it.

You say you applied for your passport - so hopefully you have some record of that? Who knows maybe the embassy staff are being overly dramatic and you will get it sooner than they say (you could try speaking to your ambassador/ or friendly embassy staff in the mean time).
When it gets closer to your visa expiring, if you dont have a passport and need to consider leaving Indonesia you can fly home without a passport - i have experience because I once had mine stolen and needed emergency papers to get home so I could replace it (the country I was in didnt have an embassy...only a consulate and they couldnt issue me a passport). I can't remember what the papers were exactly but I do recall that they were not difficult to obtain. The staff in all the airports I flew through seemed very used to the process.
Sounds like right now you need to work on the embassy staff here and your ambassador.

It seems SA expats are in shitty positions all over the world. I dont know what to say. I dont think Indonesian authorities will be flexible on their passport requirements if you did apply to be a citizen here. You said earlier that there are no available flights but Qatar does seem to be flying to SA still. Perhaps you could go back to renew your passport faster in SA? A few months pain might be worth the hassle in the long term.

Im glad you saw this news. I do however want to stay here in indonesia until just before my kitap expires in august 2022. Reason is i want to wait for normality to return, and also have some time to save up for the trip and what appears to be a lengthy stay in south africa to process a passport. I dont have any life to return to there, other than staying with my elderly mother, so i need time to prepare funding.
I will go to see immigration about it tomorrow. It appears from the comments ive read in this forum, that immigration will allow me to stay as long as my kitap is active.. then i will use the emergency travel documents to go home on an expired passport. The embassy did mention to me about this emergency travel document, just that i wasnt focusing on their words because i was so stressed about the passport application. I waited almost 5 months to get an appointment with them to do the passport application, and yes i have applied, but they showed me a big fat bag of passport applications that have been sitting in their office since even before the pandemic started.

Maybe the SA embassy is adapting some of Indo's government way of doing things....if you can make it difficult, why making it easy? (Speaking of my own current KITAP extension Saga...)

I don't remember how long it took me to renew mine (Passport)...I think it's somewhere in the 2-3 weeks range also (I do remember it was pretty fast AND efficient without much documentation asked...just my current passport and that's it).

I'm sure you are already aware of this but I read yesterday that if you allow your SA passport to run out you cant renew it, you need to restart the application process which seems to take a long time. This is just some info I saw on a website so it could be incorrect but it might be something you can look into. If its true then you might need to act sooner than you say here. I really sympathise with you. This situation absolutely stinks. We take our home countries systems and standards for granted sometimes and thank you for reminding me about that. To be fair, the SA Embassy doesn't have their own building, but they share an office building with several other embassies.

Still, I would like to know what the restrictions are that they(SA embassy) can't go back to SA.
