Optician in South Jakarta (english speaking)

There is a very good eye hospital / clinic in Lotte Shopping Avenue in Mega Kuningan
Very big, modern, efficient, affordable
Check ups, tests, even LASIK etc

I went to the Ciputra SMG eye centre (in lotte avenue) to get an eye test at the weekend (I want to get contact lenses here and needed the prescription). 475,000 for the test and I was seen immediately without an appointment.
However, I was a little surprised when they have informed me that the prescription of my glasses in 1 eye is incorrect (very very incorrect the Dr informed me).
My glasses are new (December 2017). I got them in Specsavers in Ireland, a well respected British company with modern equipment and well trained staff and who have been tracking my glasses prescription for the past 15 years. I think the most important point is that I'm delighted with the glasses - they seem to be the right prescription!

I didn’t say it was BA, just wondered how the chap got on with his nice new expensive specs he had ordered, many people ask, lots of info given and they are never heard of again, did they take any of the advice, was it helpful

Thats definitely weird because that would be something you can see (no pun intended) I mean if the glasses is wrong, your sight would be blurred

So the dilemma, believe the Indo doctor (who I agree seemed very professional and knowledgable) (actually my one was Chinese Indo) or the Specsavers girl who may or may not be a qualified doctor and just a Saturday shop girl?

Just how far off was it? What did you do?

In Ireland it was the Optician who found my prescription - here it was a technician. She seemed to be very professional but I do feel that the equipment used back in Ireland seemed to be a bit more automated (computerized - less room for human error). The Dr. here met me briefly to look at my retina and hand write out my prescription on a scrap of paper.

In my left eye in my Irish prescription I am -1.00 whereas here I'm only -0.25. Its a substantial difference. They did find the same astigmatism score (-2.5, which unfortunately is much worse than my shortsigntness score). My right eye is almost the same in both prescriptions.

Ok, I mean usually the eye test they put on different strengths of lens on you for the test, so surely if they put on -1 you would know yourself if it was blurred? Maybe need another opinion

But as long as you can see in your glasses then its ok I guess?

Because I have severe astigmatism (it is in fact what I need glasses for mostly rather than short-sightedness) it really isnt so easy as +1 or -1 showing the big difference.
My current glasses appear to be working perfectly - I'm very happy that I got them while I was home :)

I just bought (auto darkening) sunglasses which are also -1 for driving the car and I must say I was impressed with the technician and the equipment used. No issues whatsoever, I would recommend it without any hesitation. Progressive would have been possible too since I have + as well, but I did not want that for in the car (besides looking at a GPS I won't read there).

[BTW, we did an extra 'blind test' (haha) with two people who were with me and who wanted to check their eyes and they got the same result here as in Europe and Singapore]

Ahhhh one of the unanswerable questions of the universe :D

Hi.. I'm the OP.. sorry for not following up, I know how unappreciative that can seem..

It's not often that i get to answer "one of the unanswerable questions of the universe...", but it turned out my mate was very pleased with the glasses he bought here.

The only issue seemed to be the alignment of the bifocals in the frames but he'll get used to that i'm sure.

I am also in the market for a new pair of specs myself so it's good this thread is still alive.

An current update on decent opticians would be nice.

Optik Seis and Optik Melawan are nice, but frames are so expensive. They also have a limited selection of minimalist frames like semi-rimless. Are there less expensive reputable shops with a good selection?

Also, someone mentioned in this thread it's better to do a professional eye exam in a clinic, not in the optic shop itself, is that still a valid recommendation?

Certainly. This practice is common not only in Indonesia but also in many other countries. When you visit an eye specialist (Doctor) for an eye examination, they don’t just assess your eyesight, but they will also check for potential issues with your eyes. It’s more than just a vision test.

When you request an eyesight test, there’s no obligation to purchase the spectacle frame from them. While it may feel a bit uneasy, it is entirely optional. You can always choose to buy your own frame separately and simply pay for the lenses and fitting services.

I got decent Polaroid glasses for 2 million Idr - frames and lenses- at a random opticians at at a mall. I also got a cheap & cheerful pair of glasses for about 400,000 idr a long while ago (again at a random optician in a mall) & they are still fine, not fallen apart or anything.

I already had an eye test prescription before I went into buy, but I had a quick check up again and it was very basic, considering the eye tests I have had elsewhere - so yes, I would advise a decent check up every now & then to check for eye disorders and diseases such as glaucoma.

I didn't use English, and a few words in Indonesian were enough.
The frames are easy - just pick up the ones you want.
The eye test was on a machine that required no language skills at all.
The test glasses (the things will all the lens swaps) just needed me to thumbs up or down
Letters are letters (even if some are pronounced differently)
I tried Optik melawai but found a better and cheaper
FA vision were very good
