New Education Minister

I hate to be a negative Nancy, but robotics programmes have been flavour of the month for a.decade or more. Plenty of competition, including BI materials.

Yeah I wasn't suggesting a robotics program either. It tends to be expensive to start with. But the one I proposed and was involved in for quite some time is run by a non profit foundation (SAE Foundation) with grants from the National Science Foundation and of course lots of automotive companies.

Also, these sort of drop in and out programmes, firstly they are often stand alone, meaning they do not contribute to a coherent and connected curriculum, which reduces their effectiveness. Secondly they are rarely self sustainable, meaning they do not train the trainer to implement, but rather require the school to invest in outsiders and outside materials each year.
Yep agreed, that's why I like the AWIM program enough to have been a volunteer for a number of years. They do request, when possible that there is an industry volunteer to help out the teacher. On the alignment with the curriculum, the AWIM programs are aligned with the US national curriculum and many of the states'. They also have a chart somewhere, specifying which part of the curriculum and specific topic is covered. Plus it is encouraged that the teacher work with the volunteer to align the activities with the specific classrooms.

What I really like is that each of the AWIM program is modular. Meaning that it's not about sitting down and making something in one sitting. But there are a number of steps the kids have to take in order to get there. It could be a classroom activity (doable in 30 minutes) on friction, then something about propulsion, then something about force, etc. As a matter of fact, the teacher can choose not to do the final product but just use the various activities included as part of their classroom teaching.

The classroom materials are typically non consumables and if they are they're not expensive or common items that the teachers can purchase themselves from many different sources. The initial cost is to get the curriculum materials and 1 set of classroom kit. You can actually get just the curriculum materials (once you have it, you can just use it forever by making copies, etc). You can go here to look at the prices: http://awim.sae.org/teachers/apply/

Great business model for making a profit... but not particularly great for a systematic change in schools. ( I may well be incorrect with regards to this company/group.but I cannot help but feel cynical when I see they require a cost, but are also soliciting donations, or when they claim to be working on a cause, but offer full time employment.)

For commercial programs, you're right. I've seen many curriculum programs that cost thousands of dollars. And even this program won't be able to make systematic changes. It all depends on the teachers and parents and the community. But I really do think that this is a great program for most schools. They're not making any money off the kits. If you go to the link above for the prices, and go to the most expensive kit (pinball one) at $2120, it comes with enough classroom kits to be used by 24 teams. The same curriculum, in the basic edition comes with enough classroom kits for 4 teams at $440 cost. At about $110 per student team, and let's say 4 students per team, that's less than $30 per student.

You're right, they're soliciting donations. Because they continue to come up with new curriculums and programs and they have a whole office working on taking orders, attending conferences and putting on teacher's workshops, etc.

Now, granted I may be biased because I've been involved in this program even at the national level for at least 10 years. But I don't think they're that bad, are they?

Turns out they are full up (4 days as week) on extra-curricular activities, some of which are similar to the ones on the site. The list for this term has just come out and includes robotics and Kid Quest (problem solving adventures). I'm actually a bit surprised that the 5 year-olds are doing robotics, had thought it was legos till six or so.

No problems. Looks like your school is doing pretty well with making sure the kids have good activities outside of rote learning. The robotics program (the one I was involved with was the Lego FIRST Robotics program) is doable by kids as young as 6 (perhaps even 4-5 with good supervision and direction). It's amazing to see their imagination and creativity take off. Plus I've seen 6 year olds starting to do the programming and having the logic of the tasks outlined quite professionally.

I had forgotten to say thanks. Thank you.

OK, I like it already, seems like it is different to the ones that I have experience with....

For many National Plus schools, that's 25%-50% of the yearly science budget. Just for one activity. Just saying.

BTW - If you feel I am having a go at you, I'm not, and I apologise because it is not meant.

WK: no problems. It is always good to hear counter arguments against one's ideas and thoughts.

Your info about each kid really only budgeted $50 to $100 is a good one. And that's national plus. I was already offering in the beginning (back in 2010) that I would get the kits for free for the first classroom. (again, typically the kits are recyclable or can be replicated easily enough).

All I needed was a commitment from the principal and a passionate teacher. I'd volunteer myself and or find others. But no one serious was biting. But then again I had just arrived and I don't know anyone.

I'm a bit busier now than before, but if anyone of you guys know 1 to 3 schools who could use the program and have a passionate teacher who can work with me and a committed principal to support the program, I'd have some fund to pay for it. Otherwise I think I'll leave it alone again for a while. When I retire rich maybe I can pay for many many more and actually make an impact.

Note: this program is not affiliated with me in any way, and I'm. It compensated by its success or failure in Indonesia.

What's your location ?

I'm sure you already know, but if you are assisting, be careful that you are not considered to be working for the school without correct documents. ... .

Ok to add my two pennies worth to this discussion - I have my kids in a very good national plus school in Bali, the educational system they offer is great but the one point I disagree with is the fact that they refuse to teach integrated religion. Ie Christian kids cant learn about Hinduism (rather ironic considering we are in Bali) same applies for Muslim kids wanting to learn Christianity. How can a child be indoctrinated in his own religion whilst being refused the opportunity to at least learn the basics of another belief system. Surely this leads to ignorance and suspicion in the future. As an atheist I would like my kids to have a basic understanding of all religions so as they are able to formulate an educated opinion of what they feel is right or wrong rather than being taught solely about their own religion only.

I've had this argument before..... and lost. Apparently, the religion taught should be their own.

Surely this leads to ignorance and suspicion in the future.

Yes.

Nice idea Scoot, but never happen, unless to know thine enemy, like you not particularly religious if all, but I feel kids should know without brainwashing to make later in life grown up decisions on what they think of religion, my son brought up R,Cs, now totally atheist, so they were a bit put out when my little grand daughter told them Jesus was a very kind man, religion as far as I know isn't taught in Australian schools, so they are trying to figure out where she got this pearl of wisdom

As a bit extra regarding religious education, hoping not to disrupt the thread, but I went to a catholic school and a government school in the UK, one the History taught has a different slant, from the catholic view, Elizabeth and Henry were evil because the kicked the Pope into touch, from the Protestant view, Mary was an evil Catholic who burned Protestants, don't even mention Oliver Cromwell, in secondary school the bible reading classes were taken by a Baptist who hated Catholics with a passion, so a friend and I the only Catholics in the clas had an hour of misery, so really a religion taught in school needs some serious thought, can be a good thing or total disaster

'Full-day school' protects children from pointless activities: Minister

Culture and Education Minister Muhadjir Effendy said on Monday the “full-day school” system he had proposed for all elementary and junior school students aimed to protect them from spending their day engaging in wasteful activities.

Is this where we could argue that (some/most of the) school (s) are pointless activities here?

I doubt you would get much of an argument on that topic.

There needs to be a lot of changes if a full day of school is going to have any benefit. Just so normal for a Minister to want to jump in with some great decision on the benefit for others without doing any homework themselves. Anything to make them seem worthy of a pay check. Here you go Indonesia, we are going to babysit your young children in a controled environment so the can not form any opinions that may disagree with the State. Yep, much better to create submissive little robots.

How long would it actually take to enact such a proposal? Who do they think will accompany the students? Teachers? Then that would require a massive pay raise to compensate for the extra working hours... And then a massive tuition increase to pay for the pay raise... Then who should get the blame for the price increase? Hopefully the minister who brought about the changes.

more new ideas....

Culture and Education Minister Muhadjir Effendy has said that he will review the free school tuition policy because it is often deemed as a stumbling block to increasing public participation in managing educational institutions.

He went on to say that he would revive school institutions, such as the school committee,

Responding to questions about the controversial 2013 curriculum, he said his ministry would continue the implementation in schools. “There is no reason for schools to not implement the curriculum,” he said.

How long would it actually take to enact such a proposal?

2 days to 2 years.

One example I can think of was when they published a requirement that all Principals have a Master degree or higher... and backdated it. We had to let a Principal that did not fulfil that criteria go.

But I am thinking of the parents that are already late picking up their students each day, now they will point to the paper and say, but the Minister said it should be like this....

Who do they think will accompany the students? Teachers?

Yes, of course.

Then that would require a massive pay raise to compensate for the extra working hours...

hahaha.

No, really haha.

hahahaha.

Yeah, right.

Child Commission Challenges Minister's Full Day School Program
http://en.tempo.co/read/news/2016/0...-Challenges-Ministers-Full-Day-School-Program

Asrorun said that the policy should provide a solution to child problems. However, judging from Minister Muhadjir's consideration, the program was intended to adjust children’s time with their parent’s work hours by changing school schedules.

That seems to be exactly what it is. Looking out for himself? A friend ir relative?

Asrorun added that new minister does not need to rush in making new policies without proper studies. Policy on the education sector, especially policies related to national education, cannot be based on personal experience. Asrorun argued that each student has different family conditions and cannot be generalized.

It seems to be what most ministers do. Come in and start shooting from the hip while lacking a viable target. Maybe it's for the press. I know it isn't to actually do goid things.

Seems like typical Indonesian government oversight, especially in education. One step forward, two steps back; one jump to the left, two jumps to the right; followed by a lot of head-scratching over why not much progress is being made, another change of the guard, and repeat steps 1-6.

An idea so breathtakingly stupid, it could only have come from an Indonesian minister. Nevermind that even with school days ending at around noon, half the time I see the kids out by 10am.

Anyway, the idea lasted only a couple of days:
