New customs regulation, only 5kg of processed food allowed per person?

How can you have heard of Jimmy Choo but not Christian Louboutin lol
The latter is infinitely more well known than Choo

Choo was decades ago a decent brand owned by a Malaysian until Tamara Mellon bought it and completed ruined it. Manolo Blahnik another one gone.

But Louboutin and the red soles have been famous for decades now.
It's like saying you've heard of Pierre Cardin but not Gucci
Yeah, man ... I am so superficial ... 🤣

Those red soles I noticed, but the brand? So many brands pop up nowadays. I can't keep up. After the 'swatch' hype I just stop caring for brands. It is because of my wife I still have some knowlegde of brands.

Still don't understand how they will tell if something is new or not, or where it has been purchased.

Shoes. Look at the soles. How worn etc.
Inside. The writing. Etc etc
It's more formal luxury shoes than sneakers even though some Nike Jordan's can be $000's

Im still reading it as 2 pairs of shoes max, new or not. Some sort of penalty due on above 2 and if any of the first 2 look new and expensive then duty will still apply.

Very sloppy policy probably made to encourage some on the spot negotiations

The regulation I think (hope) targets 'new' clothes not worn ones...now me personally when I go back home to pdx I don't buy too many new stuff anyway, but if I did (men's clothes) I usually tear the tags and wear 'em right away. Shoes...I might just buy a pair that's about it.

The "Jastip" people are the ones worry about this....hopefully non-Jastip people shouldn't be too worried, unless some naughty officers decided they wanted some extra cash that day....

and I personally have the 'no titip' policy since people take it for granted....anything from a simple small electronic spare part to a pair of bigass basketball shoes and the person ordering it nonchalantly asked me if I could bring the big box too. I said, well you have two choices. Ya want the shoes or the box? I can only take one.

The government is clearly very concerned at Indonesia's imports being so high, but I had to laugh at this statement:
Sandiaga emphasized that this is a national movement to encourage the use of domestic products. Therefore, he appealed to Indonesian travelers to limit the imported goods or souvenirs they bring from abroad.
“So what we want to say is that if you have to buy souvenirs, just buy them in Indonesia,” the minister said.

The news in more details.

I'm not sure what they mean about "... per passenger for a period of one year."
If I come this March with two pair of shoes, does it mean if I come again between April 2024 - February 2025 I may not bring any shoes at all? And is wearing one considered as bringing? Should I be barefoot if I've already exceeded my maximum allowance?😅🤣
If they mean that it applies only to new items, then it should be stated clearly.

It means a special task force will be made to monitor the import quotas. They will employ 7.625 new government employees for monitoring and support and develop a self-reporting application for passengers, that will slow down the disembarkation process.

Anyone got any links? I searched for info and couldn't find anything.

Ok i found this but i think the reporting style seems suspect. Any actual government document?
The original regulation is from The Ministtry of trade Number 36 of 2023 concerning Import Policies and Regulations issued on December 11, 2023.

It is a comprehensive document to comprise 1393 pages for those who are interested in reading it :LOL:. It can be accessed through the Ministry of Trade's website.

Acorrding to this site, it went into effect on March 10, 2024

I found this picture on FB circulating regarding the new regulation, including an example how much one has to pay when over exceeding the import limit.

500 USdollars over the limit of 1500 USdollars ---> Rp. 2.564.750 import tax. The downside of this is of course, that Customs will determine the amount one exceeds the limit.

And another (not so clear) picture, regarding textile, explaing what kind of textile.

Customs agents are going to be drooling now that they will be going through international arrival's bags item by item.

One will probably ignore the Indonesians arriving from Malaysia and Singapore with boxes upon boxes of items.

In my opinion, customs officers seem to prioritize appearances, want to be seen as doing something rather than addressing the real issues. They focus on the wrong aspects. How much money could they save if they catch someone bringing 5kg+ of processed food in their luggage (differentiate it with meat products), bring alcoholic beverages 1L+. Compare it with the staff time doing the check in the bag. Not to mention passenger time in relation to the delay.

On the other hand, how many high-end cars, luxury vehicles, and HDs big motorcycles, expensive bike brand like Brompton, etc are present in Jakarta, and how many of them are subjected to taxation? How do they enter Indonesia undetected? This fact is widely known.

Consider the number of customs and tax officials currently under investigations. One prominent recent case involves Rafael Alun Trisambodo, the Director General of Taxes at the Ministry of Finance. The discussion is here

It is only after getting the public attention for another unrelated case, the corruption cases on revenue and custom office went to surface.

Designer items are also easily smuggled through alternate airports, particularly for individuals with the privilege of landing at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport.

I have not seen or read other countries that could match Indonesia "ON THE PAPER" in term of custom and duty regulations.

Well let's see how this pans out, someone has to do the job. I assume these kind of controls will stay random, if not, then the fun will be over soon with days of additional waiting time at the airport until every baggage piece has been checked accordingly.
I wonder who always comes up with some of the ideas presented in these regulations.

Random as in picking out/singling out the bules from USA, France and UK 🤣
I’ve entered Indonesia so many times in the last 20+ years. Only ever had a problem once in Medan a long time ago, when I brought some samples back from China for my US business.

My observation has always been that someone comes up with an idea, they implement it, then they discuss it and think it over.
I also always get this impression. That's why before there is a need to panic, wait how it will really look Iike in the end.

In Indonesia, the issue lies in the fact that when an individual, a government official makes a policy mistake, rather than facing dismissal, they often receive rewards.
Only when public outcry demands their removal do they come under serious scrutiny.
