Mixed marriage/relationships- aka Oh those idiosyncrasies

When driving motorcycle with my wife on the back she would told me ''awas'' at EVERY corner and for EVERY other vehicle getting nearby us.
When driving car... I don't it make her too much exausted of stress, SHE DRIVE.
In Canada the traffic is too much fast for her (habitued to the 40km/h of indonesia not to 80-100km/h), I can finally drive!

Everytime the kid are sick my wife goes on internet and come back with the worse sickness ever even if the syptom don't fit.
Many time I had to comfort her: no, the kid don't have bloody fever... they don't even have fever!

I see the ''masuk angin'' as the exact same thing than ''catching a cold'' which is not a sickness as it but a way/factor for catch one... in a different environment with different set of bacteria/virus.
But the wife will bring this for almost anything and everything.
The kid feel bad because she eat too much: Angin masuk!

Every indonesian have ONE remedies that would cure EVERYTHING. For my wife it's vick's robbing cream.
One of my girl is very prone to puke. A bit of stress and here we go, everything out... and her my wife run to get her pot of Vick's ointment.

Talking about Vick's... Most indonesian think their ''candy'' form are noting more than that, candy! - Hopefully not for my wife!

My wife is the king (it's higher rank than a queen? right?) of the kitchen, nothing to complain, she is a very good cook... just have trouble to understand I could have different taste than her.
If i buy something I like and she don't she will never cook it and always serve me something else. For being able to eat what I bought I would need to skip her meal and eat MY stuff... and than she will have a depression because I refuse to eat her food - which is the equivalent to told her it was not good.

She don't want we live in an old house... must have hantu!
Would need to build a new house from ground... and still... would need to check up for being sure nobody never ever died on this land. ??ancient cemetery??

She is affraid of dirt like if it is fill with bacteria, virus, parasit, venimus insect, etc, ready to jump on you at first sight.
She will make a distress crisis seeing the kid playing in a carré de sable (sand square?)

Can anyone clarify why I'm not allowed to plant chilies in view of a door? My wife says it's not allowed (something about bad luck) and it was one of those things I chose not to push. I've got a great space just begging for more Habaneros but its a no-go zone for chill plants.

There is so many thing that even indonesian don't know why.
Mostly they were said what to do and not to without the reason... and they repeat (and distord it because they don't know the reason) ad vitea eternum.

I believe it is called sandbox. Ah... the best years of my life..... and the amount of sand I swallowed by accident I am surprised I am not called a sandman.

kids should be encouraged to eat dirt....... and worms :D
and drink from puddles, I remember getting hell from my dad for doing that

It's funny. I think my wife is very Westernized but reading other post here I realize that while Westernized, she still carries some of the same habits and beliefs as those from days gone by. Just proves the point, you can take someone out Indonesia but, you can't take Indonesia out of the person.

When the husband gets busy...
Up & down stairs carting metal poles, wire.. tools and stuff.
When you are too afraid to go look and see, 'cos you asked "what are you doing?" & the response was "secret".

When you made arrangements to go visit a a sick friend at 11 am & are running a mere 15 minutes behind schedule & then hubby says - "Honey, cancel, it is too hot now".

When you spot him bathing the dog in an old paint pail...(dog- not impressed at the indignity of it).

& these are all just examples of things I take for granted nowadays- I don't bat an eyelid & just leave him to get on with it.

uhuh.

Mine loves kittens, but doesn't want cats. Nope, sorry, you feed the kitten, now you look after the cats, dear!

Same with mine, except with dogs....she loves cute puppies, but once they get big, she says she'll give them to me. Solution: I play her youtube videos of cute puppies everyday.

Yeah...what is the deal with masuk angin? Apparently it is worse if your hair is wet...

Is there any medical research that suggests having your wet hair in the wind causes symptoms of masuk angin? I have always taken that at face value since my mother used to fuzz over getting masuk angin all the time, and only later found out that it is not a universally held belief....hahaha.

I have lost the arguments (I know...we never win them..) and not even engaging in another one when my wife starts the convo with "Kemarin masuk angin...tapi sudah lebih enak kalau dikerok"...I don't even take the bait now and keep silent.

My wife insists I use the broom to sweep the bed before making it.

when we are at the store, it is can you buy this for me instead of can I get this.

Sweep the bed: Same here, except my wife not only sweeps (with 'sapu lidi') she also smacks the whole entire bed (her side) with it. I let her be, until she started sneezing and asked me what's the medicine for it. I said "Stop beating your mattress like it has done you wrong."

Wife 'politely' tell me "Hey, we need to give the satpam lima ribu cause he always opens the gate when we come home late at night"...she said this as she casually takes my wallet and take the money...

I saw a story on cupping on NPR, http://www.npr.org/sections/health-...3/athletes-go-for-gold-with-red-spots-blazing, and told my wife about it. I said that the article mentioned there was some small evidence to indicate cupping was effective (it is apparently hard to design an experiment for cupping). This was immediately taken as proof that masuk angin is real and kerok-ing works... which is a topic I have always attempted to be politely skeptical about. Half an hour later, I found myself wishing I had picked a better topic to listen to an argument about. :sorry:

Have a chat with her about fogging... at least it is a bit more fun :D

My son in law at his mothers suggestion brought a chap to the house who does "Cupping" it was for my Osteoarthritis, sad to say it failed miserably, tried the wife acupuncture lady, another failure, but the Jamu she got from the kampung works fine, got a government sticker

My husband won't put the toilet seat down when he sits to do his business because "that's for the woman."

Also, there are so many linguistic differences which have made me laugh so hard. One time, he pointed to my toe (which I had stubbed and was badly bruised) and asked me "What happened to your foot finger?" It took me a moment to realize it was the literal translation. It took me about a year before I realized that when he was saying "magazine" he was actually trying to pronounce "medicine."

My husband will also try on clothing I have which might be too small for me. Once a year, I go through my clothing and donate or throw away old garments. Most of the stuff he refuses to get rid of, probably because he came from an upbringing in which recycling old clothing would be considered a luxury.

He says that I should never eat food that was given to me by a stranger because they might have poisoned it or used it for black magic.

The air conditioner gives you gas??

Overall, I tend to get a lot of amusement out of these little things that happen with us all the time. They make for great stories, too.

Funny how some women get about living the toilet seat up, they don't put it up for us gents, I expect some Indonesian houses have no seat, just the hole in the floor type, so no problem no seat

Actually, I've seen an Indonesian woman leave the seat up. She preferred to put her feet directly on the porcelain, as squatting on the seat seemed unsafe.

Hahahahah you made my day........ You husband is a real spartan!!!! "No prisoners" Auuuuugghhhh, "No toilet seats" Auuuuugghhhh hahahahaha.

As for the toes or fingers I understand him as I also have one word for fingers (on the hand or on the foot).

As for the clothing well...... my wife is kind of like your husband (she will not throw away clothes) ... eventually she will donate clothes for the maids. Usually my wife is wearing my clothes when she is cleaning house, cooking, sleeping (sometimes). Because it is "nicer and warmer".

It is supper hard to convince my wife to throw away any clothes or give it to someone! Our wardrobe is starting to look like promotion basket in matahari!

AC and gas..... my wife said the same 4 years ago. Now somehow she is not saying anything about AC. My wife also said that ordinary electrical air fan will give you gas as well.

As for the food from the stranger ..... well I wouldn't accept it not because of poison or black magic but simply because I am not convinced it was made in a clean environment with fresh ingredients. God knows how long it was stored and in what conditions it was kept all that time.

Where do I start ?? So many but my absolute pet hate is both my wife and kids never close doors when the AC is on and never turn out lights. My wife says she will have Shut the door and turn the lights out carved on my grave stone.
