Mixed marriage/relationships- aka Oh those idiosyncrasies

Yeah...what is the deal with masuk angin? Apparently it is worse if your hair is wet...

Is there any medical research that suggests having your wet hair in the wind causes symptoms of masuk angin?....

Maybe this?

.....Cold weather and respiratory disease, including flu, also go hand in hand. Research has shown that cold spells are reliably followed by upticks in the number of deaths from respiratory disease. Some of this may have to do with a few infectious organisms, like flu viruses, thriving in colder temperatures, but there's also evidence that exposure to cold temperatures suppresses the immune system, so the opportunities for infection increase. A study published in The New England Journal of Medicine in the late 1970s famously debunked the belief that the common cold is linked to cold exposure, but British cold researchers have maintained that there is a cold-to-common cold connection. Their hypothesis: cold air rushing into the nasal passages makes infections more probable by diminishing the local immune response there.

Yes, being honest about cooking is tough with an Indonesian spouse.

I love my wife's cooking, but she experiments, and it doesn't always turn out good. I'm honest, because I don't like to eat stuff that's not tasty. If I compliment it when it's crap, I'll just have to eat it again! :)

Luckily 90% of her food is very good or better.

Hahahahahahahaa I got the same!!!! Sometimes I am asking my wife (just for fun) how do you call this food that you just cooked? Her answer is: "I don't know, there is no name .... I just mixed everything from the fridge and cooked it". I do wonder sometimes what kind of "Frankenstein" food I will get this time.

My wife is also experimenting but I do give her a feedback like "this is too dry and need more sauce" and because of the feedback, gradually our "kitchen-life" is getting better.

Yeah but you still need to catch it from someone else and in cold areas, that is made easier by being indoors with others more. Walking down a street in cold weather will not make you any more susceptible to illness.

Not necessary .....some viruses and bacteria live inside you all the time...... they just wait when the immune system will get weaker so they can overwhelm it.

Talking about Indo wife cooking.. there is a story, about this bule trying to improve his wife skills on cooking. He decided to take on Rendang. He loves rendang and he gonna impress the whole extended family that he can cook a better rendang! So he went to buy the best meat available, using his wife recipe he cook the rendang in pressure cooking pan. Proudly, he presented the rendang, nice, soft, juicy and tasty rendang.. Here comes the big day.. all the extended family were about to try his rendang.. aaaaand.. there was no compliment! apparently Nice soft juicy rendang were not to our liking .. yes we like those rubbery meat and bit hard to chew.. just like in the padang resto Poor bule.

We had found just the opposite. My wife thinks western cooking whenever she cooks so the dried out piece of leather that you chip bits off of they refer to as rendang here because a tender, thinner but still thick sauce, full of flavor. The family raves over it and always ask, Aunti, please make your rendang for us. Uses the same meat, cooks it stove top like everyone, doesn't cook it until it's all dried out, cuts the meat with the grain being very important.

ya.... bed sweeping and..........
while not uniquely Indonesian... back seat driving, with ongoing calls of "AWAS". My wife's record is 23 from here to Tasik (15km)

Oh my... yes indeed, literally back seat driving by my hubby- when out on the scooter he very annoyingly tries to steer me with his knees.
So if you are ever in Bandung & see the Bule on the bike with the hubby on the back yelling at each other- yep, it is us!

My wife complained about me using the aircon in Indonesia. We then spent a summer in Sydney (again complaints about the aircon). Then back to Indonesia by herself and complains about how hot it is.

She finds something on special and buys a lot of it. I came home one day and looked in the pantry. Found about 15 air freshener things. I ask why we have so many. "They were on special". I ask why we would need to buy more than we would ever use in the next 2 years. "They were cheap".

I'll keep an eye out on Wednesday, I'm sure to be in need of a smile :D

EDIT: I was right, I did need one... never came though

Whenever I am feeling a bit down from a cold or a touch of the flu, the wife and numerous family members show up with a bottle of ointment and a coin. Apply ointment and scratch the skin until it looks like a bad flogging. I have never yet allowed it, so I can not report on the health benefits.

One time in the States, my wife had a doctors visit shortly after this form of "self medication". It took some serious convincing to stop the doctor from reporting abuse.

I believe it's called Kerokan. My wife does it a lot. I've done it to her a bit. I'll certainly admit the first time I saw a woman with it, I was sure she had been abused.

Not my favourite choice of solving cold, but I did it. I wasn't well last week. When I called my aunt, she said "Oh dear, too bad your husband can't give you kerokan." Not as competent as my grandmother, mom, or aunt, but he actually can. :D

And what's with this 'chicken soup' thing that cures a broken leg...when anyone mentions sick my wife gets out her chicken soup recipe.
And what's with this kissing everyone (including same-sex) on both cheeks when visiting.....and kissing again when leaving.
And what's with this Indonesian wedding which costs a fortune, takes hours to line-up to say congratulations.....and no booze.
And what's with Jakartans preferring manual shift cars to automatics...in that city's traffic.
And what's with this rubber (karet) time Indonesians invented but no-one else has heard of.
And what's with Java and half of Sumatra being further east (where the sun rises) yet the clocks are an hour behind Singapore and Malaysia...further west.

My mum can't live without 'kerokan' and when I was a little kid, I hated it. Now, I actually taught my husband to do it to me properly so I can have a little bit 'being at home' feeling. Husband also started to think that 'kerokan' works and quite addicted to it when he feels a bit unwell.

As for cooking....mastering a delicious and good consistency of gravy is quite difficult for this Indonesian wife :)

My wife is a garden freak, she doesn't like any shrub or bush too tall, she cuts the bushes before I have a chance to stop her, I go into the garden and there's a bush totally slaughtered, I ask he what have you done, she tells me"Bonsai" I have to explain its not Bonsai it's a mess, I've hidden the shears and secaturs, but she still finds them, I tell her I will trim the plants, no she wants Bonsai, luckily most plants in Indonesia recover quite quickly

I did the same when I first moved to Melbourne. Maybe it's an Indonesian gen.

The other thing is, some of the wreckage from her hacking, she just pushes into the ground and it takes root, I do it and it just shrivels up
