Migration and marriage

So, i’m a bit lost. Later this year im getting married in Bali to an Indonesian. We were under the assumption that we could register our marriage in Bali right after the fact, untul the wedding organizer said due to a recent regulation change that is no longer possible and must be at the capil of the Indonesians KTP area.

This brings difficulties along with it; we do not plan to live in Indonesia in the future as my job moves me around. Any dealings in the future, thinking of visa applications that need proof of marriage, children born etc, would need to be done in her area. This will prove very time consuming and costly considering she comes from a place only reachable by 2 flights and a 5 hour drive.

So I figured, we’ll just change her KTP and register our marriage in Jakarta, that should ease up further dealings with capil etc considerably.

Well.. or so I though.. Spoken to the local kelurahan who informed that they need a family member already living here for her to be able to get a KTP. And she should make a new Kartu Keluarga first.. I don’t really understand the procedure, as it seems an incredible bureaucratic nightmare that doesnt make sense.

Anyone been in a similar situation and have some advise? Pointers in the right direction?

One thing that has crossed my mind was ro wait and do all of this after marriage, as if she does all of this now she’ll still have the status of “belum kawin” on everything, which will then need to be changed again. I also figured as I am already an official resident of this area, having her joining me as my new wife ought to be easier? Or is that too easy thinking? Also we should register our marriage within a certain time frame, can the entire process be done before that timeframe is up? Are there major consequences to not registering our marriage on time?

I’m on a company sponsored KITAS in Jakarta and she’s from a different island, in case that matters in the process.

In order to move KTP/KK to Jakarta, someone has to go to her current KTP address and request a Surat Pindah at the local Catatan Sipil. As usual the letters need to go from RT/RW to Kelurahan then Catatan Sipil. They will (or should) also take the KK and KTP to be invalidated, so make sure to have lots of photocopies before hand.

Then with that in hand you need to go to your intended RT/RW in Jakarta, get letters from them (Surat Keterangan) that you are intending to move. You will need an address in Jakarta, and possibly proof that she lives there. With that letter, go to Catatan Sipil and finally process the move.

There should not be a requirement of having relatives already in the area, that's ridiculous.

Your line of thinking was correct, @Euc- But perhaps her 'domicile' is not in Jakarta (she does not rent anything or can not prove it)? Or she might live in a kost where the Ibu Kos doesn't want that the tenants have the address on their KTP's?

Nah, she actually lives with me already, paperwork from building side would be easy. Guess we'll just wait till after the wedding and make things a bit easier.
