I "found" a paying job for myself, during the pandemic. Somehow my financial situation has been better with the pandemic and no, I don't receive any US government aid. Like I said before, I found a paying job. I use social media a lot for my business and yes it is good for business. But, I am so agree with this CEO. I too am ready to lose all the opportunity to make money if the government decide to close down all the social media. It does more harm than good, especially to our youth. Can we live without social media?

Can we live without social media?

I live without it, and I dont think I miss out on something.
After all we lived without it 2 decades ago. And I don't remember people being less happy, quite the contrary in fact !
No FB, Insta, Twatter etc....
A bit posting on 2 or 3 forums, but if they close down it won't change anything in my life.

Edit : But I do understand that in the actual world, where 80% of people are hooked on it, it can be a big help when running a business.

No Instagram and Twitter. I only had FB to avoid impostor (I'm security conscious as always). Made myself "invisible" so nobody can see my FB page, but still I'm receiving invitation to be "friends". And I don't know how they are able to do it. I only had one friend (my own relative) for the sake of "activating or validating" my account.

Not really IMHO.

FB, Twitter, Instagram yes. I have none of them.

I have Linkedin, but again that is a professional network and pretty useful for job search, keeping in touch and or follow up on your field of competence.

I don't think so too because everybody use pseudonym. How can you socialize with someone you don't even know their real names? It's a media in some way, but not social media (my opinion, of course).

I “only” have about 500 friends in my FB. All real people. Sometime I wonder… where and how do I get to know 500 people in my life???

FB "friends".... it makes me laugh....
I had hundreds of mates, pub buddies, work colleagues, girlfriends all over the world due to my travels for work.
A FRIEND, I have only one, we go back to our Navy days, joined the same company, same speciality, worked in plenty countries, both married with Asians, we both know most of each others life, etc....

That's a friend. If he called me and asks for 5k euro, he has them immediately, no question asked. And same on his side.

Even LinkedIn has impostors (but probably much less than FB), once I was invited to connect with the former prime minister of Thailand (the younger sister of Thaksin), it turned out that she's a fake. The profile is complete with photo of her and job as ex-prime minister. Who would have thought it's not really her?

The reason I had FB is exactly the same reason, to prevent anyone from creating a page with my name and photo to scam others.

I am in my 70s and never used a computer for the first 45 years, except while at UC Berserkeley circa 1970, enjoyed the class, but computers were all about card punching back then. My wife and daughters are way too far down that particular social media rabbit hole, but I only use WA. I work on my computer, but once I am offline I prefer to be a human than a robot, glued to my HP and online media "presence". Hard to imagine how we ever got anything done without computers, but the technology, and reliance thereon, are definitely double edged swords. I pity kids today for the glut of virtual self involvement, bullying, trolling and nonstop personal branding that immersion in social media enpowers. Other than this one, the only forum I really frequent is one where I try to answer questions for newbies in my field, which I enjoy. When I was first here in Bali in '77, there was no traffic in Kuta, and almost no telephones on the island! Actually there was traffic, Macet Bali Asli ... rice farmers pedaling their bicycles home from their paddies in Kuta!
