The Indonesian volcano Krakatoa, also known as Krakatau, has reportedly erupted.
Reports say it sent a plume of ash several kilometres into the air, with a boom that could be heard from far away.
"Please stop making that booming noise and go to bed, Anak Krakatau. It's late and we've already got plenty of other things to worry about," one person wrote on Twitter.
"Krakatau is erupting nonstop for 2 hours," wrote another. "I live in bogor and I can hear the noises as clear as everybody else hear. This feels like a nightmare."
Volcano tracking site Volcano Discovery called it a "large magmatic eruption", at least the biggest since 2018, which caused a 150m-high tsunami wave that hit an uninhabited island. That boom was so big, the Anak Krakatau lost two-thirds of its height.
"Both the webcam on Anak Krakatau Island and from the coast (in 40 km distance) show strong lava fountaining from the volcano," Volcano Discovery said, saying the plume was 14km high.
A local expert told CNN Indonesia the lack of traffic at the moment, thanks to COVID-19 lockdown measures, made it easier to hear Krakatoa's rumbles.
Magma Indonesia said the "main crater smoke is gray and black with moderate to thick intensity about 200-500 meters from the summit".
When Krakatoa erupted in 1883, it created a tsunami that was still a whopping 42m high when it hit land, killing 36,000 people.

Thanks for sharing. Covid19 has displaced all other news sources I read/listen to so I wouldn't have known about this if I hadn't seen your post.

When I first moved to Indonesia in 1993 and heard people call it "Krakatau" I thought they were mistaken. By the time I left for good in 2018, I'd long since realized that "Krakatau" is correct and "Krakatoa" is the less authentic spelling/pronunciation. Seems the world has largely caught up with this fact (Simon Winchester's book may have helped) - Google disambiguates "Krakatoa" to "Krakatau."

I'm not sorry I'm no longer in Jakarta, but I would like to have heard the mountain go boom!

Looks like Anak Krakatau has been erupting for a couple of days. Mask warnings for a wide area. I’ve seen some epic nighttime eruption videos. Here’s a daytime pic from IG.

I got out on Saturday evening, just before they stopped all the middle Eastern flights, so feeling pretty good about that!

They keep on shifting the times of resuming the flights (to and from Jakarta). Yesterday it was 5 PM, it became midnight and then it was communicated as 9 AM this morning and now it became 6 PM. Let’s see.

Land travel from Bali is also not easy; everything is sold out.

I think unfortunately there's activity north south east and west so we are kind of hemmed in by smoke, no way e.g they could all go south then turn to the north etc apart from going to Oz, pretty much most of the planes going up over SG and on to Middle east, some NE to Japan etc so we have a long wait
My next flight isn't for a few weeks so will hope it dies down by then

Are they not using Kertajati as an alternative?
It is an easy run up there from Bandung and last time I used it the long stay parking was ridiculously cheap. I forget exactly but about 30k a night if I remember correctly.
The toll road up through the mountains to that airport is (was) lovely, wide open barely any traffic on it at all for miles.

Are they not using Kertajati as an alternative?
It is an easy run up there from Bandung and last time I used it the long stay parking was ridiculously cheap. I forget exactly but about 30k a night if I remember correctly.
The toll road up through the mountains to that airport is (was) lovely, wide open barely any traffic on it at all for miles.

Kertajati has become something of a white elephant. For example there are no direct flights between Kertajati and Bali. Even when flights were available it seemed more people prefered to go to Jakarta and then take transport down to Bandung than drive to or from the Kertajati airport. Last I heard was that there are plans now to make Kertajati a military airport and restore the old Bandung airport. Billions were spent on Kertajati but never mind, building contractors made a lot of money and will do so again if the old airport is restored and Kertajati does indeed become a military hub.

It is a shame really. Before we used it, we were under the impression that it was just too far out and awkward. We tried it and would have loved to use it again because it was easy for us.
The old airport was super irritating with the taxi driver monopoly there , dirty smelly old vehicles and ridiculous prices. I got to the point of walking off the site, dragging luggage along and grabbing a cab elsewhere.
